    Talking Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Users

Hello, for some strange reason the Gnome-Panel on my edgy system broke, and I couldnt repair it, so i backed up, formatted, and now im running 6.06 LTS!

Just wondering, whats the advantages and disadvantages of running LTS, why are people not going through the motions and upgrading to edgy, feist fawn, etc

Obviously Ive missed the point somewhere along the line...

    Regards Ben

Although many people would tell you otherwise, Dapper is the most stable, compatible and overall complete ubuntu I have tried to date. For those who are running and edgy and are not having problems must either be lucky or not caring minor crashes/freezes. The bottom line is that the LTS versions are by definition, more stable and built to last longer than regular releases. One of the purpose of stability in LTS versions is to be used on enterprise (server) computers.

For me, I didn't like firefox 2 on edgy and it was really unstable and buggy the last time when I ran edgy. People upgrade to a newer version like edgy and feisty because 6 months is enough in computer for things to be outdated. And I also think for desktop users, formatting every 6 months or so is just about right, so I will try feisty as soon as it is released.

For one thing, the LTS (Long-Term-Support) will still recieve critical bug fixes and emergency patches, and other essential fixes to the operating system long after edgy and feisty are no longer supported. Although it may recieve critical updates, most if not all functionality of the software packages will remain the same (stable). In edgy, feisty, etc., the functionality of the software will be improved, but the stability and support are not garaunteed.

I have LTS on my server and enjoy it being rock solid and reliable. On the other hand going through the upgrades gives you the latest features (including some added hardware) and other stuff thats great for the user (so its on my desktop).

On LTS the only time ive had to so much as restart a process is when i change a config.

Edgy has newer stuff, but there can be little bugs that pop up that involving restarting gnome panel, etc.
Call me oldschool, but just open up a terminal and use vim already!!
