There was a site where you could download some musics that where set for download by their creators... The problem is that is probably not the music you're after

My favorite pay site has been www.emusic.com for many years. But I am into more independent/underground artists than current hits. There was a time when you could get an unlimited download subscription from them, but alas that is no more. I'd estimate that 20-30% of the music I have on my hard drive came from them. After that, I would go with buying CD's directly. You can rip to the formats you want at the bitrates you want, and you won't lose them if you have a hard drive crash.
