Best place to download music?

Go for the paid sites... the ones that support the bands directly. Oh wait, they don't exist.

but that's a blessing, not a curse.

Also, archive.org has a large collection of music.

My favorite pay site has been www.emusic.com for many years. But I am into more independent/underground artists than current hits. There was a time when you could get an unlimited download subscription from them, but alas that is no more. I'd estimate that 20-30% of the music I have on my hard drive came from them.

After that, I would go with buying CD's directly. You can rip to the formats you want at the bitrates you want, and you won't lose them if you have a hard drive crash.
