I couldnt' find a working tutorial on installing the newest ATI drivers, so I just downloaded them and unpacked them to the appropriate folders. (64-bit version) Now glx gears and ut2k4 won't run. Is there something else I need to do? Thanks!

Assuming you have a 64-bit AMD from that post, rememberr that alot of things aren't really favorable with the 64-bit processors yet. They're still fairly new and some things may not work entirely.
Recommendations:
-Try checking which video driver your system is currently running on and make sure it matches your card.
-Reboot.
Hmmm, perhaps I should haev just installed ubuntu 32-bit. I'm going to try installing the 32-bit ati drivers. If that works, i'll install the 64-bit ones over it, as it seems to imply on their site that you need "32-bit packages installed" to get the 64-bit drivers to work right. I was told that you dont' when I asked about that on IRC though. whateva, worht a try.
Also, should I be able to install them just by unpacking them? Theres' this tutorial in the customizatino forums that makes you do a million steps to install them, and none of them involve actually downloading the drivers.? Anyhow, I get a package error when I'm on one of the first steps, so screw that.
Yeah, I wouldn't always trust what's heard on the IRC. It usually boils down to someone messing with your head and telling you the wrong thing.
