    Ubuntu 7.10

    Hardware:
    Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 rev 2.1
    Intel E6750
    2x1G Kingston Value RAM (KVR800D2N5K2)
200GB Western Digital IDE HDD (WDC WD20 00JB-00K)
    160gb Seagate IDE HDD (ST316002)
    Gigabyte 8600GT 512MB GDDR2 (NX86T512H)
    LG SATA DVD Burner (GH20NS10)

Had problems with the DVD Burner not able to read some DVDs. Same DVDs read fine in Windows XP.
Have a weird problem with the 200GB WD HDD where windows fails to install if the HDD has multiple partitions. Sometimes it won't load into the windows first part of setup. Sometimes I get through that and then get disk read errors or ntloader not found once rebooting after setup files have been copied to the HD. I managed to install Windows by removing all the partitions.
Need to get me some SATA HDD's when I gets money.

    Samsung Colour Laser Printer CLP-350N

Hi folks - a bit of positive feedback.

I just bought a Samsung Colour Laser Printer CLP-350N. (the N suffix indicates that it has a network connection port)

Setup on Ubuntu (7.10 Gutsy) was easy as a postscript printer

1- plug printer into my router
    2- add printer in admin-->printing
    3- printer found on network
4- install printer using PPD file on disk supplied (smc350.ppd)
job done. seems to produce perfect prints from Firefox, GIMP, Openoffice etc

there is also a proprietry linux driver on the disk, but I didn't bother with this

Only one complaint - doesn't come with either a USB lead or a RJ45 network lead - I had a spare one but it would be very annoying if I hadn't!

Very very relieved that my post here wasn't a cry for help!!!

    Take it steady folks
    Cheers

    Matt

    Ubuntu 7.04

    HP Deskjet 3550 USB printer

    1) Connect your printer.

    2) Install driver via 'sudo apt-get install hplip'.

    3) GO to System > Printing. Let it your printer, then select it from the list.

    4) Test it with the HP-Toolbox by typing hp-toolbox at the shell prompt.

    5) Also try printing a page form something some other program.

I bought one printer about a year ago for the first PC and found it so easy to instal and it worked so well that I have bought the same model printer for a second PC. The HL2030 is 16 pages per minute, 8MB memory, 2400 x 600 dpi and connects via USB 2 cable.

I have just bought the second one from Amazon UK for £60.85 plus VAT (and a USB cable at £2.55 plus VAT). [Make sure you are buying direct from Amazon and you can use "Supersaver" to get free delivery in the UK.]

I downloaded drivers from the Brother Linux printer driver pages. Instal the LPR driver first from:
    http://solutions.brother.com/linux/s...r_drivers.html
    The method is here:
    http://solutions.brother.com/linux/s...r_install.html

    Then the CUPS driver from:
    http://solutions.brother.com/linux/s...s_drivers.html
    The method is here:
    http://solutions.brother.com/linux/s..._install3.html

Check in Systems | Administration | Printing to make sure the printer is shown.

Connect the printer to the power and switch on. Connect the USB cable to the PC, then to the printer. Press the "Go" button on the printer to print a test page

    Happy printing!
    thanks man

    Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy)
    External Hard Drive
    Seagate
    FreeAgent Go 160 GB

Comes formatted as NTFS, but can easily be changed to ext3 with GParted or similar tools. Actual capacity is about 6 or 7 GBs less than 160 due to the way memory is calculated. Also comes with preloaded software, incompatible with Linux, which can be easily erased from the drive.

I've heard several people complain about power issues with the USB ports, but so far I have not experienced this. With just one USB cord plugged in, I backed up my 26 GB home folder with no problems.

    Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64/i386
Opteron 1212 Dual Core socket AM2 (CPU is recognized as such in both i386 and 64 bit).
Gigabyte GA-M61P-S3 with nVidia MC61P single chipset solution (6150SE/430 integrated graphics).
    Samsung Spinpoint SATA II
    Amigo AME-CA95 56Kbps External V.92 DATA/FAX/TAM RS232 serial modem.

Everything works flawlessly on install with both AMD64 and i386.

    Olympus D-545 ZOOM digital camera.
    Creative NX Ultra webcam.

Both work out of the box.
