Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 live CD kernel 15 install as dual boot with Win XP Pro - done as a comparison between each OS out-of-the-box (without proprietary drivers and without extra Ubuntu drivers).

All basics work first up, with about 30s to boot. A bios bug and a memory resource allocation error message flash by, but don't influence booting. Will probably need to be tracked down for fine video resolution later on, but it looks like there's enough memory to run all kinds of video.
Screen resolution defaults to a slightly too anamorphic 1024x768 at 61hz, ( and the resolution can't be changed with the Gnome UI) but it is a better read than the default Win XP Pro "safe"-like resolution out of the box. And even with the proprietary drivers, the Win experience is underwhelming. The Gnome desktop has just so much more clarity and reading-friendliness on these small lcds.

Battery management is as desired, with hibernation smoothly enabled in the prefs and with all function keys for screen power responding as expected. This includes default screen off with lid closing.
NOTE that the default power applet misreports the power source in the narrative balloon, even though the system prefs respond correctly. AND the screen doesn't automatically dim when battery power is chosen.
There are fewer power management options in the Win out of the box.

Audio works as a muted compromise driver for all application outputs, the mixer hasn't been tried to increase the volume of output or for recording from the inbuilt mic, nor has the spid interface been tried.
With the Win XPPr0 SP2 (up to date) out of the box, zero audio.

Optical drive plays basic discs on default apps. Of course, there aren't enough default codecs for a good range of read operations.

After applying all Ubuntu auto updates - to kernel version 16 - the installation remains stable, but with no extra fine function added so far.

The machine has been acquired as a basically un-networked book reader for a disabled user.
Ten out of ten for the functionality overall.
8 out of ten for a few fine tunings, and it looks as though Gutsy will have those answers without the user needing to do too much manual driver installation.

screen and graphics card ( with the correct 1280*800 resolution right out of the box, installed ati drivers through repositories and worked fine , FINALLY!!!, although Urban Terror for example is slower than on XP, in Ubuntu i get ~30fps, on XP ~70fps or plus, Desktop effects works OK, I'm using XGL but there is a problem that i can't play any games if i have XGL installed....

it's annoying, I installed Ubuntu in Dual-Boot with XP. In older versions of Ubuntu i never had that problem... If don't i press any key it takes 2 minutes to boot (i don't see any progress bar, black screen until login screen, but if i press ctrl-alt-f1 it boots immediately

So far so good, almost. The USB drive is partitioned with a swap and two fat partitions. (incase I want to install an OS on it) On the second partition there is a backup folder that has all 90GB of my saved media. That is the only folder I can't access in ubuntu. Windows can read it alright.

Also had some trouble with the install, same problem with 7.04. It would boot the live CD, start the install. Hit about 70%, installing locales and it would hang without fail. I finally found some help on here, sorry I can't find the original post.
They suggested pressing Esc at the live CD prompt, pressing ok. then typing:
live acpi = off
The system installed without crashing until I rebooted.
I had to edit the first line of the grub boot loader and added
acpi = off
as the second last line.

I use the system for playing/streaming media, hosting my Django powered website and everything else I need a computer for.

Processor works, internet works, video card works, burning CDs and DVDs works, tv-tunner works. Sound works, however it seems to me like the maximum level is only at about 60% than it should be, but this probably is a problem which I can repair.

This install started as a 6.06 but I have upgraded it to 7.10 through apt-get over the past couple months. It was actually in a Dell E521 pc with the same parts as above except the mobo / cpu / ram, but I just plugged it into this new system and it booted right up. No complaints, and the ONLY thing I had to fix was the time. works perfectly.

The only thing that I don't know works is the onboard soundcard (cmedia?) as I haven't tried it. It probably will though.

What did you do to get the Soundblaster Audigy 2zs working in 7.10?

The Laptop is fully working, except for the 3D acceleration, but this is a problem well known with the Mach64 Ati driver. The Wireless networks is now suporting WPA Keys and the roaming mode is supperb!

The machine is not a hurricane, but is fast even using Gnome.
