I've been playing around with the script, and I really like this. But I can't figure out how to disable compiz and use metacity instead. It's not in the autostart in Gutsy. I tried something like
    Code:
    sleep 15s
    metacity --replace
without success. Any ideas on how I can automate this? (The reason is that I don't like the video playback in compiz, it flikkers)

I got it going with xrandr, but couldn't get it the way I liked it (two seperate desktops is no longer supported) and 3dfx don't work with a virtual desktop greater than 2048 in either direction with this card.

Xinerama, while it is supposed to still work, has been replaced by xrandr.

Also, there is a nice script to setup monitors based on what xrandr detects here:

    Ubuntu 9.04 64bit on Dell Vostro 1510, Core2 Duo T8100, Nvidia 8400M , Intel 1395 Wireless.
OK: Wireless, kvm, Canon irc2880, Synergy.

Re: How To: Svideo / Dual Monitor(xinerama) / Dual Monitor(cloned desktop) on i945

Hello all, I have a "mini-PC" (based on the mini-ITX form factor) that uses the Intel 945 chipset. However, this machine not only has a S-Video out, but also composite and component video.

I've gotten this machine working in Windows where I have a cloned display where one will display in 1024x720 on the VGA out and 1920x1080p on the component out. I'd like to get this working in Linux and dump the Windows partition.

So far, I've been able to get maximum performance in Linux from the VGA port but nothing from the TV out. Linux has identified the hardware, even that there is a second video out. But when I try to set the second output to active, the X-server won't start. I've been able to fix it by reverting to my old xorg.conf file, but can't get this working even in the most basic capacity.

This thread was all that I could find that related to my issue. I tried the how-to and that was worse than simply turning the second output on. (Probably because of the additional video outs). I think that this is an exotic off-shoot of this chipset. However, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just wrote a new bash+zenity script that allows choosing an appropriate xorg.conf-file without ever touching a terminal - check it out (with screenshots): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4211618

Someone mentioned that xinerama has been replaces by xrandr - is there any chance that someone has a xorg.conf.dual that is based on xrandr instead? Hopefully that would add DRI to the dual setup I assume?

Here is my xorg.conf for dual screens. It allows me to have my 1680x1050 laptop screen on one side and a 1280x1024 monitor on the other.
    I then activate it doing:
xrandr --output LVDS --auto --right-of VGA

    Got it from here:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=617934

I'm also attaching a script that automatically generates the xrandr command and allows you to set the resolution of the external screen.

I haven't tried your script yet, I will when I get a chance... it looks nice!

im not sure what went wrong but i end up restarting in the terminal. said something like no images found i fixed that problem by change to # 1 from # 3. ill see if it was something i did.

    o should this "$ sudo /etc/X11/xorg.conf.svideo" be "$sudo kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf.svideo"?

Regarding the second part of your message. please see this post by me:

(in short, yes, you should include "kate" in the command)
