Re: How To: Svideo / Dual Monitor(xinerama) / Dual Monitor(cloned desktop) on i945

Has anyone gotten this setup to work with the video-intel driver instead of video-i810 ????
Some patches have been applied to video-intel to save more power in the newest source.

Yes, I have an Intel integrated graphics card. How do I set modes for the screens in the 915reolution config file?
First check whether 915resolution is picking up the resolutions. On a command line run:

    Code:
    sudo /etc/sbin/915resolution -l
If this lists all the graphics modes that you want to use, then you are okay.

If you need to edit the config file the command is:

    Code:
    gksudo gedit /etc/default/915resolution
set the xres and yres for the resolution you are not getting.

When you switch off clone mode it sounds like you get your laptop work correctly, yes? If so, then have a look at the settings for the other monitor in your xorg. Does your mouse move from one screen to the other correctly? If so, you at least know that xorg has the screens around the right way. You can tweak the xorg.conf settings for your second monitor without killing your primary monitor.

So try changing the default depth of the second screen to something quite low and working with the resolutions at that level.

Try the following xorg.conf. I've got it working with my ATI X800.
    Code:
    # /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)

    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.

Then I suspect that 915resolution is not installed? I believe that it's in the universe repo, installable from Synaptic or apt directly.

Re: How To: Svideo / Dual Monitor(xinerama) / Dual Monitor(cloned desktop) on i945

I have an HP laptop with i945 graphics. I have tried this method to get the s-video out working, but my success has been limited. The best I have gotten so far is getting the desktop to appear on the television, but nothing else appears on it (opening a browser, playing a video, etc.). Is there a way that I can just have the video appear on the television without appearing on the laptop screen? I really don't care about dual monitors, only switching between the built-in LCD and the television.

UPDATE: I have managed to get video on only the television without appearing on the built-in LCD by switching the "Monitor Layout" to "LFP,TV" in the xorg.conf.svideo file, but now whenever I play a video the computer crashes and needs a hard shutdown.

Probably the only way to do it would be to create a custom xorg file that the TV as your only output device. You could try copying the xorg that outputs to TV and try editing the LFP,TV section to read TV only. I am quite sure what you are trying to do can be done, because when i was first writing the how to i remember outputting to TV only at one point. If i get some time later today i will experiment with a few things

This guide seriously rocks! Thanks man!

    A few notes:
    • Worked perfectly on my laptop
    • Except for switching from dual to single monitor (Hangs the system)
    • Solved by manually restarting x (alt-backspace)

Thank you so much. I've spent 3 days trying to find a solution and here it is. More power to you "scripting gods".

I have a laptop (lenovo 3000 c100) that has an Intel GMA 900. The laptop display has a resolution of 1024x768. Now I also have a TV that I would like to plug into the external monitor plug (not the s-video) because this way I get a very good resolution on the TV. But I would like to know if it is possible to output a widescreen resolution to the TV when the laptop itself is not widescreen?
