    Is this true...

Here's a email i recieved... is this true??

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM
machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse.

For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The
    ATM
    recognizes

that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the
    machine.

The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to
    the
    robber,

the police will be immediately dispatched to help you.

This information was recently broadcasted on TV and it states that it
    is
seldom used because people don't know it exists.

    No.

    It's absolute rubbish.

Please don't forward that email to anybody else, you will only contribute to the continual jamming up of the Internet by crap such as this:

Rumour has it that if you play Microsoft CDs backwards you will hear Satanic messages.
Worse still, is that if you play them forwards they will install Windows.

    Re: Is this true...

I seriously doubt this is real.
However, there is only one way to find out...

Does the police charge you if you call them without a purpose in your country?

Edit: Ah well, Catsworth's link says it all...

Of course this is true. My pin is 2442 and I entered it backwards once. The Police was there immediately.

    Re: Is this true...

This was lookied into by several states in the USA, and there are people who campaign for this mechanism - but it has always been rejected on the grounds of the above email (the symmetrical problem). It's one of the great internet urban myths. Another good one is that Vista apparently provides a decent OS - and if you believe that then you WILL believe anything.

It will just eat your card if you continue doing it. Anyway, what kind of robber tries to jump you BEFORE you've taken your money?

I was under the impression that thieves demanded money rather than asked for it

Regardless, they would get no money from me.
