We all liked the Pixies in the early nineties. It was like the only band everyone liked. It was the band of Détente. They'd get played at parties because everybody liked them, and nobody really disliked them.
Pixies - Debaser
Also well tolerated by mixed crowds, to this day even, were the B-52s:
The B-52s - Rock Lobster
Love Shack
Here's an obscure one:
Mesopotamia
Edit for egghead analysis: How did they score such mainstream success when their cultural roots arose from gay sub-culture? Answer: it was the 70's, the sexuality was ignorable, you could pretend they were hetero-normative if you wanted to. Straight people probably assumed they were straight, gay people probably assumed they were gay... Compared to glam-rock from the early 70's, everything new wave seemed straight at the time.

...you wouldn't believe me even if I tried.
Lets do this instead:
The Spaghetti Westerns Music - Greatest Western Themes of all Time
1.5 Hours. Probably good work background music, though, at a low volume.
First time I ever heard of them. Definitely not my cup of tea. Vivaldi, heavy metal of the late 1600s and early 1700s.

I think we prolly traveled in different circles at the time, uRock... I hung with East coast bohemians and wanna-be's for the most part... Lots of starving actors and other creatives... students not pros, though...
I'm listening to two sound streams collide from other browser windows. You don't wanna hear it.
