    Re: Master Kernel Thread

Ok, well I decided to try compiling my first kernel with KernelChecker and I have run into some problems. I'm currently running kernel 2.6.36 on Linux Mint 10 on this partition. I was attempting to compile the 2.6.38rc7 kernel. First, I was able to grab a few warnings I saw during the compiling process. This is incomplete but it was all I was able to copy down. (Note: some may be paraphrased)

    Code:
mkpiggy.c.65: warning ignoring return value of 'fread' with attribut warn_unused_result

Warning modpost: Found 2 section mismatch. see details build kernel with" male CONFIG_DEBUG_SECTION_MISMATCH=y

via-core.c684: warning: assignment discards qualifiers from pointer target type
    LD [M] drivers/video/wia/viafb.o
        Building modules, stage 2
        MODPOST 2724 modules
WARNING: modpost: Found 41 section mismatches
When the process completed I also noticed that it ended with these two lines:
    Code:
cat: /etc/X11/xorg.conf: No such file or directory!
cat: /etc/X11/xorg.conf: No such file or directory!
I was not sure if that was going to be an issue because it didn't seem to say the compile aborted or failed.

When I installed the two .deb files I saw this message several times:
    Code:
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8168d-2.fw for module r8169
But after looking for r8169 in other kernels all I found was this:
    Code:
    /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.36-020636-generic/include/config/r8169
    /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.36-020636-generic/include/config/r8169.h
    /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.36-020636-generic/include/config/r8169/vlan.h
Both r8169.h and vlan.h are 0 byte 0 text C headers that, as far as I can tell, are just empty files that don't do anything, so I didn't worry about it. (I know now that it's the ethernet kernel/driver. I never use ethernet though)

I updated initramfs and grub (received the same firmware warning) and then rebooted.
When I got to the grub screen I did not see it listed, so I booted back into the kernel I was using before. I saw the the linux-headers-2.6.38-rc7-candela directory, and I swear it was completely filled with empty files at first, but looking again several minutes later it appears that everything is there. I also noticed that there was now a directory called "linux-2.6.37" and a "patch-2.6.38-rc7.bz2" archive that appeared from who knows where, in addition to the *.38.rc7 kernel directory and the "Linux" directory. Also, the linux-2.6.37 directory looks like a kernel directory but it has about twice as many items listed within it than any other kernel directory (57 items vs 24-29 items).

It was about this time that I realized that the Natty Alpha-3 that I installed the other day on another partition overwrote grub and that was why it wasn't showing up in grub. I thought I successfully reverted back to the Mint grub and thought everything was starting to go well until I finally booted the new kernel. After selecting it from the grub menu I had a large plain text dump onto the screen for about 3-5 seconds and then it froze (with my caps lock LED flashing). I could not print screen but I did take a crappy cell phone picture.

What is all this jazz? How might I go about correcting this? Any assistance is much appreciated.

    Re: Master Kernel Thread

I was trying to compile 2.6.38.6 candela and had some kind of power glitch. Now I cant get rid of the error. This is what I get when I try the manual way of installing.

    linux-2.6.38/virt/kvm/kvm_main.c
tar: linux-2.6.38/virt/kvm/kvm_main.c: Cannot open: File exists
tar: linux-2.6.38/virt/kvm: Cannot utime: Operation not permitted
tar: linux-2.6.38/virt: Cannot utime: Operation not permitted
tar: linux-2.6.38: Cannot utime: Operation not permitted
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

I tried reinstalling with Kernalcheck and it failed. Apt-get fails and synaptic gives me an error. Any help would be appreciated.

    Smile Re: Master Kernel Thread

In the troubleshooting section I noticed this part:

    Q. After GRUB boots my kernel, all I see is this:
    Quote:
    Code:
Begin: Waiting for root file system...
and then you say that you must compile the kernel for SATA and not for ATA.

I think that you must specify this part (in red color) in the instruction guide before the compiling part, so people don't go through compiling 2 times because of this simple thing to do.
    Just my opinion.

    Cheers.

    Re: Master Kernel Thread

Hi. I've never done this before but I have 10.04 and a Sandy bridge mobo so thought I'd try my luck at upgrading to 2.6.38

All went according to plan except that I had to purge nvidia-common and I got a few "kernel crash notifications" along the way.
Then I still got these warnings:
    Code:
    Setting up linux-image-2.6.38-mk (2.6.38-mk-10.00.Custom) ...

    Are they important?

Then when I rebooted it dropped to a text prompt, complaining it couldn't find the nvidia drivers.

IMPORTANT: IF YOU HAVE AN NVIDIA OR ATI GRAPHICS CARD, YOU MAY HAVE TO REINSTALL THE DRIVERS FOR IT.
I see. Unfortunately, I don't know how to action this.

    [update]
I got it working. It was a roller-coaster ride and I actually stopped my previous kernel from booting at one point...it produced the Ubuntu splash screen then went black and became completely unresponsive. Meanwhile, 2.6.38 would not run gdm at all. I did a lot of Googling, installed nvidia drivers from their site, had a lot of kernel crash reports, then uninstalled nvidia and to cut a long story short I managed to purge nvidia from the system and now both boot properly. As soon as I have the courage to reinstall nvidia drivers I'll post the result.

I don't know what I am doing here, and I am in no position to advise anything. But my advice to similar ignoramuses is to uninstall all nvidia drivers before you carry out the new kernel procedure.

I haven't resolved those warnings, but I gather they are something to do with Realtek. I haven't noticed any ill effects so far.

So I am running 10.04 with 2.6.38! What fun.

Note to OP: one thing I forgot that failed in your instructions, the second line of
    Code:
    sudo cp /usr/share/kernel-package/examples/etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs /etc/kernel/postinst.d/
    sudo cp /usr/share/kernel-package/examples/etc/kernel/postrm.d/initramfs /etc/kernel/postrm.d/
failed because the /postrm.d directory did not exist. I created it.

    [update]
Running the new kernel I used the System/Admin/HWdrivers utility to reinstall the nvidia recommended drivers. This failed to complete and I got several kernel crash notifications. Something is very broken now. I ended up doing 'sudo apt-get -f install' to identify the 3 broken nvidia packages and I removed them. Then I booted in rescue mode and ran the driver install shell script that I downloaded from nvidia's website. It warned me that my distro config didn't want it to install but offered me the option to install anyway, so I did (that'll show it!). It then complained about the "nouveau" module and offered me a nouveau module disabling module and I accepted. It then installed and all has been well in 2.6.38. Actually, the nvidia drivers are better than the stock Ubuntu ones that I used before as I get a control panel customized to my graphics card.

But my old kernel, 2.6.32 complains on boot about the drivers and only offers low graphics mode.

Note: upgrading to the new kernel and/or the nvidia problems broke my VirtualBox. It would not launch. So I had to remove it and reinstall it. Now ok.

I'm using the new kernel now and it seems stable enough. Music works, video works, RAID works.

I would be grateful for anyone's comments regarding gotchas of running an old distro (10.04) with a new kernel (2.6.38 ). Is this generally considered an ok thing to do?

[Ubuntu] Patch and compile the 2.6.39.2 Kernel

    Hey all,

I'm trying to patch (bfq/bfs) and compile the new 2.6.39.2 using this tutorial. I downloaded the 2.6.39 series bfq/bfs. i patched files and patched them in order. I got a few Hunks and i don't know how to fix them.

    Terminal:
    ~/Desktop/Kernel/linux$ patch -p1 < 0001-block-prepare-I-O-context-code-for-BFQ-v2-for-2.6.39.patch
    patching file block/Kconfig.iosched
    patching file block/blk-ioc.c
    patching file block/cfq-iosched.c
Hunk #1 succeeded at 2844 (offset -1 lines).
Hunk #2 succeeded at 3127 (offset -1 lines).
    patching file fs/ioprio.c
    patching file include/linux/iocontext.

Thanks if you can help me.
