Re: Windows based installer - testers and developers wanted

sudo ntfs-3g /dev/hdXY /mnt just gives me this..

"Error opening partition device: Device or resource busy
Failed to startup volume: Device or resource busy
Failed to mount '/dev/hda1': Device or resource busy
Mount is denied because the NTFS volume is already exclusively opened.
The volume may be already mounted, or another software may use it which
could be identified for example by the help of the 'fuser' command."

The expanding a drive looks promising, but i dont know if it'll work with my version, i dont have a /wubi folder, just the ubuntu folder with everything inside that, also, it looks like it'll clear everything in my home.img, which isn't what i want really...

Im using ver3 currently, which does have working internet.

The latest version i used, which was alternatate herd 4 + wubi-7.04-herd4-v1.exe doesnt work with my modem, says the kernel doesnt support some file or something. Internet worked when i tried it with wubi.0.0.0.9.exe, but on that version it hung after 10 mins use. So i've no choice but to stick with the version i've got and somehow get the windows partition mounted/viewable/read/writeable so i can resize the home.img without losing anything.

ok, so i finally got it to work using v5, and the iso which was the default one...i'm trying this on a laptop, when i first booted into ubuntu, it said that no kernels were installed, and that i could do it from a cd, i then burned a cd of that image, when i was prompted again, it said it was unable to do so, but it did it anyways, eventually i got to the login screen, and i was finally able to login, however the touchpad doesn't work, and wireless doesn't work, so i decided i'd plug it in, i get a no network connection on the top icon, i changed the settings to dhcp, still nothing, i tried kill nm-applet and running again, it did not do anything (i tried 12 times) any ideas as to why it's not connecting? it does recognize my network card.

2 improvements to the installer autobuilder at http://cutlersoftware.com/ubuntusetup/buildwubi.sh

it can now automatically upload the autogenerated installer and sources to the cutlersoftware site and link the latest version to http://cutlersoftware.com/ubuntusetup/experimental.html and http://cutlersoftware.com/ubuntusetup/experimental.html

it can now accept input for the version number and adjust the nsis script accordingly, so you no longer have to modify the wubi nsis script to change the version

Then, if you have a standard computer,
    - Just make room on your hard disk ( at least 10 GB free)
    - Go to "My computer", select your disk, left mouse clic, properties, check disk, then defrag.

    Go to c:\wubi.
Find the feisty herd 4 iso.
Copy feisty herd 4 iso somewhere else and remember where.
    Delete c:\wubi
    Press Empty Trash
    Restart the Wubi installer.

    Loopback Install.
Select Use ISO (You remember where it is, right ?).
    Press Next

When asked for reboot press yes.
    Hi ecology2007(and anyone else)
I followed your instructions exactly. The first time I got part way through and then got to a"cannot install software-do you wish to continue" page, I tried to continue but it kept returning to the "cannot install software" page and then stuck on it.
I escaped via the power button and tried again. This time, surprisingly, the installer downloaded a fresh ISO and the installation then continued smoothly.
I was asked to reboot-did so -chose ubuntu in the BIOS and then got scrolling pages of words and numbers. These eventually stopped on a page where all the lines began 47. The final line had "error_code+0x7c/0x90" at the end of it. After that was a 47 line with two rows of dots and below that a flashing horizontal cursor. Nothing happens after that so I have to escape via power button.
I have tried this about six times now and noticed that it is not always the same page that things seize up- sometimes it's 51 or 48, although the error code above seems to feature somewhere.
I also tried the other choices in the initial stages-ubuntu debug and something about dynamic install. The debug option behaved pretty much the same as above only different pages showed until it stalled on one and no further. The dynamic choice stalled fairly swiftly and seemed to be prompting me to type in help. I did so and a section of commands (?) appeared but I have no idea what they mean or what to do with them.
My system is about 18 months old- a Celeron r 3,06ghz, 80gb c drive, 120gb d drive and one gig of RAM. I have at least 4 usb ports and an nVidia graphics card and am running XP home. There is 49gb free space on the c drive.
As you can tell I'm one of the people this project is presumably aimed at. I come home, press the on switch and it works and I browse or edit photos etc. So this is a big thing for me.
I now seem to have two ISO files on my desk top and Ubuntu there in my BIOS but not working. I'm not going to give up now so would love some help. Shall I uninstall and scrap this lot and start again from a more recent version? I think I'm using the autoinstaller version but I,m not sure.
Please help I'm going mad with this. Thanks in advance. johnwillyums

    Wow! I just love it!
I like a lot the one is in cuttesoftware right now, but I like this one even more.

Some ideas from a windows user waiting for your next stable version to start using Ubuntu:

    1. Please let the Windows automounted.
In a previous version I installed I had access to all my Windows data from Ubuntu. But I saw in the latest I tried that you have changed it.
I know that there is something like mounting. But it is a bit complicatyed for a beginner.

    2. Couldn't the URL just be www.cuttlesoftware/wubi ?
Whatever final address you provide I will spread it all around as soon it is usable be nongeeks,
but if you could simplify this also, IMHO it will be easyer to propagate around

Regarding the translation into another languages.

Probably right now it is like shooting to a moving target, but i have seen that the text of the web site has not changed for a while. If that text is final (well, more or less) and now you are just working to improve the design part, then I may begin translating it into Spanish if you like.

If so, let me know if yu want me to send you just a text file wth just the words or an html with the design (as it is when I get it) included.
