Re: HOWTO: Dell Inspiron E1505 Wireless (Broadcom 1390 WLAN)

I think I did everything correctly.
I also installed wifi radar and I see that the networks that should be detected are there.
Does this mean that I did all the steps correctly?
I ask this because I still cannot seem to connect to the internet wirelessly.
    Thanks for any help.

Re: HOWTO: Dell Inspiron E1505 Wireless (Broadcom 1390 WLAN)

I just picked up this laptop about a month ago. I didn't have to compile any extra drivers.

I simply opened the Network Connection screen on a virgin install, and typed "eth1" into the network interface "Name:" field. The wireless signal strength bar came up, and I clicked configure. The options were all available (in the gui) to enable the interface and get hooked up to my wireless.

Did anyone else find that they didn't need to install ndiswrapper or any drivers?

Ummm... You might have an Intel Wireless card. It's a bit different. Note this only applies to E1505 computers with a Broadcom wireless card.

As for me, I still need help because the ndiswrapper reports that ndiswrapper.ko does not exist.

Re: HOWTO: Dell Inspiron E1505 Wireless (Broadcom 1390 WLAN)

Hey, I followed this guide a few months ago, and it was actually one of the more important docs that helped me make the decision to go linux only. so thanks to the original author.

but i have a new problem. last night, i left my laptop on to play some music as i went to bed. apparently, at some point during the night, my dog must have kicked the plug, and the laptop switched over to battery. well, i woke up and it was dead this morning. when i cut it back on, the wireless wasn't working.

so i went back and did the last step when i originally followed this guide. when i run this:

    derrick@derrick-laptop:~$ sudo modprobe ndiswrapper

    i get this:

    derrick@derrick-laptop:~/Wireless/DRIVER$ sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
FATAL: Error inserting ndiswrapper (/lib/modules/2.6.17-11-generic/kernel/drivers/net/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper.ko): Invalid argument
    derrick@derrick-laptop:~/Wireless/DRIVER$ iwlist scanning

i've not tried just simply restarting yet, but i was curious as to what could have caused this.

Re: HOWTO: Dell Inspiron E1505 Wireless (Broadcom 1390 WLAN)

Does this HOWTO assume that the wireless card is detected and all that? I remember running a command (I forget which) to list devices, and I get 2 - one is the Broadcom ethernet, and 1 is categorized as
    Code:
0000:0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation: Unknown device 4311 (rev 01)
. If I remember correctly, this command was a grep command.

Will this have any effect on following the HOWTO? Thanks

First, thanks for posting these instructions!

    Now, on to my problem...
I have followed all the steps, used the driver listed on the ndisdriver website for my card, blacklisted bcm43xx, installed the latest version of ndiswrapper, turned off hotkey and kept wireless always on in the BIOS, etc, etc.
BUT, when I modprobe ndiswrapper, here is the error I'm getting:

    root@1[/]# dmesg | grep ndiswrapper
    [17179585.032000] ndiswrapper version 1.8 loaded (preempt=yes,smp=no)
    [17179585.160000] ndiswrapper (import:239): unknown symbol: ntoskrnl.exe:'IoGetDeviceObjectPointer'

[17179585.164000] ndiswrapper (load_wrap_driver:112): loadndiswrapper failed (65280); check system log for messages from 'loadndisdriver'

    Any ideas??
    Thanks in advance.

Re: HOWTO: Dell Inspiron E1505 Wireless (Broadcom 1390 WLAN)

Want to confirm that this works for me.

    Details:
    OS: Ubuntu Feisty
    Laptop : Dell D820
Wireless: Dell 1490 dual mode wireless card (BCM4310 in hardware information)
    Security mode : WPA personal.

    WORKS !!!!

Now if only someone fixes the real BCM43xx drivers ...

Anyway, my question: Do you recommend any wireless programs that are good for scanning for networks and whatnot? I've just upgraded to Feisty and the "bar applet thing" that told me that I was connected to wired network (didn't tell me wireless because I hadn't set it up yet) is now gone.
    Try wifi-radar

Re: HOWTO: Dell Inspiron E1505 Wireless (Broadcom 1390 WLAN)

I've jsut installed feisty latest version on my Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. Used first message in this thread to get wireless connection working, ready for use with BT Openzone. It picks up neighbours' networks.

First question is configuration for BT Openzone: their website states that doesn't use WEP. It says that when in a Openzone hotspot, a window will pop up requesting user id & pasword. Does wireless conection need ay configuration?

Second question is that I previously altered the prepend statement (on the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf file) for the wired ethernet (eth0) connection to show the open OpenDNS IPs (i.e. 208.67.222 & 208.67.220.220) by handy in November 2005 and that worked fine (I'd previously used the same technique successfully on an older Acer laptop using Edgy). However, as soon as I'd got the wireless connection working, I disabled the wireless connection (using System/Administration/Network and the Connections tab) and I tried to run Swiftfox. I couldn't browse to any web site and so I checked the DNS tab on System/Administration/Network. And there were no entries other than 0.0.0.0. By the way, the router I'm using doesn't have the DNS IPs storable in it. When I put the appropriate entries in a nd saved, web sites could be browsed. So Feisty appears to clear DNS IPs when there is a wireless connection, Any work around to save me reloading these IPs at every logon.

Third question is that I've now installed Beryl, but I don't see the cube even though I select the xgl session when logging in.

Re: HOWTO: Dell Inspiron E1505 Wireless (Broadcom 1390 WLAN)

    Hi.

First, please take my most sincere apologies because I'm sure this has been asked a hundred times already.

    Here are my details:
    Laptop: Dell Inspiron 1501
Wireless Card: Dell Wireless 1490 (the drivers are the same)
    Ubuntu Feisty - 32 bit
    AMD Turion 64x2

Okay, now I've gotten through every step successfully, until we get to the last step--checking for wireless networks. Here's what happens:

    ben@ben-laptop:~$ sudo iwlist scanning
    Password:
    lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

    eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
I'm currently "plugged" into the Internet using my Ethernet cable... so that at least works, but I would like wireless.

    Thank you very much,
    Ben

Edit: now that I am looking at System -> Administration -> Network, my wireless device, which appeared prior to following this How-To, isn't appearing any more. Is this a problem? Please forgive me once again, I know very little about these things.
