Software development, Edgy, and slow computers

I am hoping to get a nice software development setup for C/C++ (maybe others, too) going in Edgy, but I'm a bit unsure of where to go.

I tried Eclipse and it looked good, but the computer I have Edgy on is a bit slow (500 mHz Celeron) so the IDE barely runs; it took 5 minutes to get into an actual editor. (Hopefully a bug?)

I have tried some other IDEs, and they all seem to be built for simplicity; essentially, I have to know what I'm doing to build stuff with them. They're good, but just a bit too 'start-from-scratch-ish' for my limited C and Linux knowledge.
This is the first time I've ever done any programming on Linux, so I need a bit more help than they give me

    Any recommendations?
Is there something for Linux like Visual Studio (but much nicer, of course, because it's Linux!) in that it is fast, looks nice, and has features to simplify some things? (Maybe document templates and a centralized help source?).

    Thanks in advance!

I'll keep a list here... So far I have found:
-Anjuta. Looks good and seems to have plugin support. Currently doesn't work for me, but I'll check back later depending on what else I find
-GNAT (gnat-gps). Looks nice It disappears into oblivion when I try to create a new project though. Trying to fix with a package-installing frenzy...
-WideStudio... looks good, but the web site seems a bit wrinkly and their download is broken. (And it's not in the repos).
    -Eclipse, of course.

KDevelop is a nice multilanguage IDE, why not try it?

Ah, the K thing, of course...
