tablet for school!

just had some major windows problems and decided to switch to ubuntu.


i am very new to linux and taking it day by day.



i want to purchase a tablet that i can use to take notes on my pc. I want to use it to help out with my homework and studying.

with windows i know it'd be simple to just choose one and install it nice and easy.

However since i'm now using ubuntu i would like to know if anyone has suggestions on linux friendly tablets.

i am using a nokia 770 with xournal for taking lecture notes. it come with linux installed.

its quite small so it may not be what you want.

I have a Nokia 770 as well. Not bad for wireless internet as well (email and browsing). Also fbreader makes a great e-book reader for those long commutes.

I am in a similar situation except I am looking for convertibles instead of dedicated slates. And here's what I have been able to find. None work perfectly and all require a bit of work to get to even where they are.
Amongst the newer crop, the Toshiba M400/405 is probably the most worked on.

As far as companies go HP is the nicest about some info on their website for linux related help. But it is not much and is non-existent for the latest TC4400. You can see some help here

it's mostly about tc4200 but has some stuff about tc4400 as well.
That's as far as my research takes me. Hope this helps you.

Try to stay away from the IBM x41. the speed of that laptop in Linux or Windows is terrable. with a 1.8" 4200 RPM drive it is one of the slowest drives. Only thing i can say is the battery lasts a long time, but i gave mine up for a HP.

My Toshiba Tecra M4 works very well with Ubuntu. Everything except the tablet function (easy to set up) is autodetected.

I've been running Kubuntu Dapper and Edgy on an HP TC1100 tablet and have no problems with the pen input or video rotation (once I configured it properly - I have another post on how to do that).

I highly recommend this piece of hardware if you can pick one up. The are only available used now, as HP discontinued them. They can still be sort of pricey, but you can eBay a good deal every once in a while. I found a hospital cast off unit without memory or hard drive for $200, and have been very happy with it.
