Having never seen Win8 - and no desire to see it - I didn't know that.

They were in the process of installing Win8 on all the computers at the university, but luckily I graduated before having to learn how to use it too heavily.


Also, I didn't mean to spark any arguments either for or against windows (as this is not the place for that discussion) I was merely comparing the visual aspect, not the functionality.

As I didn't with my comment either ... I have not used Windows since 2007 - I have not seen: WinME, WinVISTA, Win7, nor Win8.

WinXP I have seen on various computers at different offices ... but never beyond the screen that was showing at the time - nothing.

I recognize that for some Windows is a requirement due to job or because they are a gamer - power to them. I have long past the "I Hate Windows" comments, they serve no purpose. I don't need Windows, so I don't use Windows, as simple as that.

I see what you are coming from, but I still like the conky setup. Personally I'd grey scale that wallpaper.

Thanks. Been in and out of college since 1999, I've had enough schoolin' for a while and I'm glad to have it over with. Now that I have my weekends back (no computer labs or homework) and I'll have a week off before starting my new job, I've been thinking about kicking Conky around again, but really can't think of anything more I could possibly want it to do. Well, maybe one thing more...

I might play around with weather again since my default Ubuntu weather indicator doesn't seem to fully function anymore (no forecast available). Which Conky weather setups are currently working without too much hassle?

Windows' new goal is to have one operating system interface for every device they power; phone, tablet, PC, and ect.... I understand the goal; they want the generally computer illiterate public to be able to pick up anything with a windows logo and be instantly familiar with the interface no matter the device; essentially combining their CE and NT based operating systems. However, I believe that means there must be compromises in functionality across all devices, because the best interface for a keyboard and mouse driven widescreen PC monitor may not be the best for a small touch screen on a phone. They have since (due to enormous outrage by their customer base) made it simple to switch back to a more traditional desktop interface on their PC product line.

I will continue to use WinXP (generally offline) on one or two of my home computers long after the end of life date of April 2014 until Microsoft Office Excel 2010 becomes too archaic to use anymore or until I buy a new computer with a current Windows version pre-installed (I will, of course, add a second Linux powered hard-drive immediately after purchase and dual boot). I'm generally not a Windows hater, I just like Linux more, especially on my older hardware.

That "without too much hassle" makes it really easy, see "Teo's X4 Sites" in my sig. It's actually x5 now that he added a desperate moon phase script. I created one script that does both weather and moon ... but you still need to download the scripts from the first post. Read all of Post #1 to see what is what, he has some really nice options for people.

On a side note I really hate logging in to this forum now it's such a freaking pain...

3. scroll to the to and hit the logon button
4. taken to Ubu-One where it remembers it's me and I log in BUT ...
5. I am returned to the general forum index page ...
6. back to my email program and click on the link again
7. now it brings me here. With two tabs to the Ubu forums open in my browser!!

7 steps to get to a post is a bit much ... I might be around a lot less in the future, I hate hoops!

There's an app for the android that does weather on my tablet desktop and it uses (selectable) 3 different weather sources.
Someone with some java.fu ought to code something similar for us regular folk/desktop users.

That won't be me, not in this lifetime. There are way smarter people out there.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check out Teo's script next week if I get a chance.

I don't have post notifications sent to my email so I don't have the trouble you do. I just click the ubuntu forum link on my shortcut bar and confirm my email and password to log in. I will then click on "settings" to check for new posts (which is a rather strange place to put them if you ask me). I just make it a point to log in from time to time.

I'm guessing it's the ZIP code thing if you use that. Or maybe just the US. Donno.

Neat ... and there are conkys like that (Deviant Art) - but not that uses 3 "selectable" sources.

falldown has a very similar idea with the v9000 script, Post #955, #956 and post #962 for his own icons (AwOken like), it's based on the intellicast mobile app they have.

I'm sure some java-fu guy could do that though.

Playing around with Teo's weather Conky (1b2 specifically). It's an awesome script, but I did find one issue with the pressure "PR" row on the current conditions (at least with my location). The output shows "&darr" or "&uarr" after the pressure reading.

The following change to the .conkyrc_1b2_usa file seems to fix the issue for me.

Change the following line (line 68)...
