don's have gtk-desktop-info, but from your quote I see this problems:

This gives you all the info you need and is in a format that works in conky.

But how to display AM/PM ?

${time %P} is how mine is done, I don't know why yours won't work. Though mine first calls ${time %I:%M} (then change font size) then ${time %P}, so maybe try doing it like:

${time %I:%M}${time %P}
