    Use composite manager? Yes, try:

    Code:
    # Create own window instead of using desktop (required in nautilus)
    own_window yes
    own_window_type normal #override
    own_window_transparent no #yes
    own_window_hints undecorated,below,skip_taskbar,skip_pager

    own_window_argb_visual yes
    own_window_argb_value 0
    Use composite manager? No, try:

    Code:

No no no... argb_visuals don't work nice with COMPOSITE MANGER's - I have one, and even if I use "value 0" then it do strange things to images.
So, if someone have COMPOSITE MANGER, then he should never ever use "own_window_argb_visual yes".

    @ElainM
Post your other conky.rc that works, and install wmctrl
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install wmctrl
(or search for "wmctrl" in Synaptic/package manger and install it), and then run it in console/terminal
    Code:
    wmctrl -m
    and post that result too.

    No understand:

own_window_argb_visual Boolean, use ARGB visual? ARGB can be used for real transparency, note that a composite manager is required for real transparency. This option will not work as desired (in most cases) in conjunction with 'own_window_type override'.
    it work here with xcompmgr.

He's referring to the UBUNTU Composite manager. Unity, really, sucks hard. I was not aware it had got to this point, but dk75 is correct. If you're using pretty much any composite manager except the Ubuntu one, the argb_visuals can be used properly. Ubuntu? No. Can't do it.

xcompmgr isn't the default one that causes these problems. What you're not understanding is that the UBUNTU one is the cause of Elaine's problems.

Unfortunately, argb_visuals is the way to enable transparency using a composite manager, period. So, dk75 is confirming something I wasn't sure of. Elaine M might have to dig into her system a bit and forcibly make that Conky transparent using something other than settings. And, I'm afraid I'm not awake enough to translate any further.

Elaine? You're in capable hands with dk75. Ignore everyone else. No one knows what they're doing with this better than dk75.

but... there is another conky on the right which seems to be doing just fine in the transparency department

this might be true of ubuntu's composite manager, but not of ALL composite managers
    i get transparency using only:
    Code:
    own_window yes
    own_window_transparent yes
    own_window_type normal
    no argb_visuals settings at all
using cinnamon (and whichever comp manager it uses)

    Ignore everyone else.
that really isnt very good advice

Exactly. And dk75 was addressing that. Hence... She's in good hands. He was on a roll, I was trying to keep it going, since NoTryDo was veering it away. I shouldn't have to explain this.

Last I checked, cinnamon doesn't have the 3D composition abilities of Compiz or Unity3D. Like XFCE's Composition Manager, it's a 2D compositor that controls shadows in a pseudo-3D way. Since it's ultimately still a 2D composition, the old 2D Transparency still works on it, as it does on my machine as well. So, again, my comment stands true. Considering Elaine M has stated she's not good with Computers (Check a few posts back and try to follow along, it'll make this easier.) I chose not to include more terminology than was necessary. She doesn't need to know the difference between a 2D and a 3D compositor at this very second, she needs her specific problem solved. dk75 was on that. It's a habit I have from doing Tech Support. You suit your language to the user, in an effort not to overwhelm them.

For the situation at hand? Yes. Yes it is. With dk75 on a roll? Very much so. If it was YOU on a roll? I'd say the same to her. You both communicate solutions rather well, and have proved repeatedly that you know what you're talking about. The goal is to get her problem solved, not teach her how to code. NoTryDo and I can't help her nearly as thoroughly as dk75 or Yourself. Since you weren't around at the time, I leaned toward dk75 who was. Not intended as an affront to you, I assure you. And with a user that admits they're not great with computers? It's best to put them in the hands of one person to solve their problem, and get the rest of us out of their way. It is just to make it easier for her to understand what's going on, and reduce the chance of her getting overwhelmed or confused.

No offence to NoTryDo, but he doesn't speak English very well. What he was posting can easily confuse people who can't quite follow along. It's probably a language barrier thing. This is an international site after all.

WEll....i have done everything everyone has suggested. I either get it totally black, or transparenat with the weather icons "over exposed" or washed out. I think i will give up on this project. Theres obviously something wrong that isnt as easy as i had hoped.

Here is the output of wmctrl one of you requested.

    ernie@GOD:~$ wmctrl -m

    Class: xfwm4
