    re calendars

    there is an alternative calendar generator to cal... gcal

    its extremely configurable, although sometimes a little tricky as there are so many options
    one example here is you can change the start day

    you also have to position it a little diffrently, see the screenshot as to how

    Don't be modest. You forgot your/our calendar script as an alternative too. For the uninformed: A little something of his original creation, that I just happened to have been privileged to work on with him.

    calendar.lua (with date box function like VinDSL's design.)
    Code:
    --lua calendar script by mrpeachy version 3, 03/04/2011
    --fixed issue where months beginning on saturday would not have last dates printed
    --added previous and next month dates within calendar
    --condensed code, hopefully will run lighter also
    --fixed ability to rotate and keep box in right place

    Portables (laptops, netbooks, tablets, smart phones, etc) ARE different than desktop machines. It's a real estate thing...

    When I'm using a desktop PC, I want my launcher on the left side, my Conky on the right side, and the proggies in the middle, e.g. I want to see the launcher, Conky, and the programs, all at the same time.

    You don't have that luxury with portables, so why even try?!?!?

    Conversely, that's what I don't like about some Conky setups on desktop machines. You cannot see Conky, because it's spread out all over the desktop, and program/app covers it up.

    Many ppl have taken my desktop Conky, divided it up, and used it on their portables. While this is flattering, in a sense, to my way of thinking, it doesn't look right.

    Your Conky setup has given me some ideas. Thanks!

    Natty Final will be released soon, and I can quit obsessing on it.

    There will be a honeymoon period between Natty and Oneiric, while the devs catch their breath, and I'll use that time to come up with a Conky setup for my portables.

    Thanks for posting your code, and keep us updated, when you make changes...
    Can't wait to see what you come up with for your portables. Judging from the your script i've seen before i'm sure it'll be something great. I'm thinking about upgrading to natty, is it work upgrading to the developers release?

    Don't be modest. You forgot your/our calendar script as an alternative too. For the uninformed: A little something of his original creation, that I just happened to have been privileged to work on with him.

    And this is how it looks together (though nearly infinitely configurable.)
    well thanks for the mention!

    i brought up gcal as it is pretty much a straight substitute for cal in a conkyrc script (and runs as most people want with less of the fiddling that has to go into cal)

    the lua calendar requires a little more work ...partly because it is a lot more configurable in terms of font (any font not just monospaced), colors and layout
    of course its the calendar i use in my conky setups

    Not even in the terminal? Did you change wlan0 for your wireless interface? The exact conky line is:
    Code:
    ${if_up wlan0}${execi 15 sudo iwlist wlan0 scan | awk -F '[ :=]+' '/ESS/{ printf $3" " } /Encr/{ printf "-"$4"- " } /Qual/{ print $3 }' | sed "s/\"//g;s/-on-/S/;s/-off-/O/;s/\/100/%/" | awk -F '[ :=]+' '/%/{ print "-"$2"- "$3" "$1 }' | sed "s/-O- /\${color red}/;s/-S- //"}${endif}
    Normally it should output: "${color red}XX% ESSID" for an unsecured network and "XX% ESSID" for a WEP/WPA encrypted network, one line per network.

    See screenshot... Unfortunately I only have encrypted networks to show off...

    heres what I get when I run it in the terminal.
    Code:
    djyoung4@Daniels-computer:~$ sudo iwlist eth1 scan | awk -F '[ :=]+' '/ESS/{ printf $3" " } /Encr/{ printf "-"$4"- " } /Qual/{ print $3 }' | sed "s/\"//g;s/-on-/S/;s/-off-/O/;s/\/100/%/" | awk -F '[ :=]+' '/%/{ print "-"$2"- "$3" "$1 }' | sed "s/-O- /\${color red}/;s/-S- //"
    eth1 Failed to read scan data : Invalid argument

    djyoung4@Daniels-computer:~$ sudo iwlist eth1 scan | awk -F '[ :=]+' '/ESS/{ printf $3" " } /Encr/{ printf "-"$4"- " } /Qual/{ print $3 }' | sed "s/\"//g;s/-on-/S/;s/-off-/O/;s/\/100/%/" | awk -F '[ :=]+' '/%/{ print "-"$2"- "$3" "$1 }' | sed "s/-O- /\${color red}/;s/-S- //"
    djyoung4@Daniels-computer:~$
    even if its in a script it does that too. eth1 is my interface and the other simple script is working using eth1

    Do you get something back from:
    Code:
    sudo iwconfig eth1 down
    sudo iwconfig eth1 up
    sudo iwlist scan
    Could it be you're using other tools to manage your networks? (WICD, network-manager, ...)

    It all depends on your temperament.

    Unlike the Honda advertisements in this country ("Isn't it nice when things just work?")... I like it when things just DON'T work!

    Why?

    Making things work is fun! Things that "just work" are boring, and a waste of my time.

    That said...

    If you like things that don't work -- you'll love Ubu dev releases!

    If you hate things that don't work -- stick with stable releases.
