Do you really belive windows BS? Try linux use something fresh not something old and refurbished!!
Since it uses the PowerPC architecture, it might be possible to port PPC versions of distros like Ubuntu, but there could be problems:
-The Wii has only 512MB of storage.
-Nintendo might lock out homebrew applications
-Some of the hardware may be proprietary
The storedge is capeble to usb 2.0 with an extern hdd unit

Here's what Ubuntu might look like if they get it running on the Wii:

Hardware hacking work doesn't begin until units start to ship, so unfortunately you'll have to wait until the release date before people start trying to run Linux on them. That would be a pretty sweet machine though, and I doubt Nintendo will really put much protection onto them.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
My understanding is that the Gamecube didn't have much protection, the DS doesn't either, and the Wii doesn't have a full-sized DVD drive so running homebrews will be too difficult for the average gamer.

Gamecube didn't have a full sized DVD drive, but hey they've got online Mario Kart through some crafty exploits.
Check this link out, seems cool.
