yea the sound is like a digital to analog sort of. constant fast pulse with lots of distortion in the background. teh speakers are a 2.1 set that have internal power and internal DAC. they connect to the pc via a single RCA to a spdif out from the board.

I sounds to me like you send a digital signal to an analog speaker speaker system.

I'm not sure if it's possible to send an analog signal through spdif.
Have you tried to connect through analog output?

Kernel 2.6.21 will give a compilation error, I created a patch which works fine for me:

    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nf...l-2.6.21.patch

    Have fun

no. its all hooked up tight. teh speakers are a boston accoustics set. they ONLY accept a digital connection. no analog inputs. but your description of sound is right on. like i sent a digi signal to analog components. if youve ever set up sondstorm in windows you know the sound im talking about. its that pulsed digi test tone nvidia uses to determine which speakers are connected. my problem is the test tone never goes away.

Re: HOWTO: Nvidia nForce SoundStorm APU: Digital output, Surround and Hardware mixing

    @noorigin:
Ok. I probably misunderstood you. I have no idea how that sound can appear...
5ar (a few posts up) says he solved the same problem by reinstalling.

If you decide to try that, follow the last section of the howto to manually remove all files created during the install, but skip reverting the blacklist file.
After a reboot you should not have any sound and no sound driver loaded.
If you still have the unpacked installer (the "NFORCE-Linux-x86-1.0-0310-pkg1" folder), remove it to make sure you start with fresh files.
Then follow the howto again to set it up.
If it doesn't work, I have no clue how to help you, and if it works I have no idea what went wrong to begin with...
    Good luck

Re: HOWTO: Nvidia nForce SoundStorm APU: Digital output, Surround and Hardware mixing

    I'm using Kubuntu 7.04.

I've followed the very helpful howto.

Sound works fine, but I can't run nvmixer

    I get this error

    Code:
nvmixer: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    I checked and I have libstdc++ 6 installed but not 5

I would have imagined that v6 would be a superset of v5

    edit:

Guess I was I wrong. Installed libstdc++ 5 and nvmixer works sort of
    Any ideas?

    TIA

Re: HOWTO: Nvidia nForce SoundStorm APU: Digital output, Surround and Hardware mixing

    Hi Guys

I'm using Kubuntu 7.04 and I have this message while running installation of drivers and testing new module:

ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvsound.ko'. This is most likely
because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source
files. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files
for your kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you
have the 'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct
kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source
path with the '--kernel-source-path' commandline option.

Mouse256 did you have same error before applying the patch? I was trying to change this one but still driver cannot be installed. Or maybe I'm patching it in a wrong way? Anyone know what can be done with that?

    Cheers

I have exactly the same problem as finchy.

    Ubuntustudio and 2.6.20-15-lowlatency kernel here.
