    24.04 crash

Hi there. I have recently upgraded my HP laptop to Noble Numbat (kernel 6.8.0-49) and everything was fine for maybe a month then suddenly without me doing anything different it crashed with a kernel panic and when I reverted to 6.8.0-48 it is working again as designed. Do you think you can help me resolve the issue with 6.8.0-49? I would very much appreciate it.

    Re: 24.04 crash

My advice is to continue booting the Linux 6.8.0-48 kernel and use the terminal to update/upgrade and do not run autoremove even if invited to. Do not update/upgrade using Software Updater. That utility runs autoremove and older kernels get removed.

An upgrade might bring in an upgrade to kernel 6.8.0-49 or a replacement of (shall we say) 6.8.0-50. That kernel might work satisfactory or may be broken. You do not want to lose kernel 6.8.0-48 until you have two new kernels that are not broken. Then you can run autoremove or let Software Updater do so.

Ok I that sounds like great advice. The Software updater ran already automatically but failed so I will try updating using the terminal this time. Thanks. I'll report the results on this thread.

Ok I tried upgrading to 49 using the terminal and got an 'error 1' and it failed. Still on 48. I wonder what would have caused 49 to stop working out of the blue?

    Any further troubleshooting ideas?

The only thing that comes to my mind is if only the kernel was upgraded without the dist being upgraded.
Not sure if this will work as you may've already tried this...
    Try running...
    Code:
    sudo apt dist-upgrade

    Re: 24.04 crash

I was using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and an update/upgrade broke both kernels. I was dual booting with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, so I still had a working OS. I tried using recovery mode to update/upgrade for a few days but it did not fix anything. So, I forgot about 20.04 and then months later when I was on the point of installing over 20.04 I gave updating through recovery mode another try. Between 400 and 500 packages were upgraded and when I rebooted I got a login screen that loaded into a working desktop. This is the experience I based my advice to you on.

When I was running 22.04 a new kernel started to run the laptop at a higher temperature then the kernel it replaced. I used recovery mode to boot into the older kernel and also use the terminal to update/upgrade. Then one day I forgot and used Software Updater and it run autoremove and I lost the kernel that ran the laptop at a lower temperature. Learn from my experience.

Initially I upgraded the dist as recommended by the Software Upgrader. So are you suggesting the best and maybe the only way out for me is a reinstallation?

Yes, thank you. I haven't forgotton that. I mistakenly started another thread. I have tried upgrading using recovery mode a number of times already as you suggested with no luck. I am still working fine with the 48 kernel so I'm not in a big hurry. Just exploring my options. I very much appreciate all the help I am getting here. I keep wondering why, since it was running great after the upgrade, it just crapped out for no apparent reason.

    Re: 24.04 crash

    Re-installation is last resort here.
Take my advice as a grain of salt.
    Follow others advice here first.

Per grahammechanical's posts...stay away from software updater.

Considering the other advice here and all that you're experiencing, the better option may be to trim out everything that doesn't work.
You know, the non-working kernels and all.
    Everything that isn't working currently.
    reboot
    Then run all cleaners...
    Code:
sudo apt clean && sudo apt autoclean && sudo apt autoremove
    reboot
Then run through terminal, not through the software updater...
    Code:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade && sudo apt dist-upgrade
    reboot

    Check functionality.

If this works, create a system snapshot of some kind. (I use timeshift for this)
On the other hand, If this doesn't work...then re-installation might be the best thing.
