Ubuntu Desktop Security

Good afternoon, i have been reading about security in Linux.
As far as i understand, we dont usually need a firewall or antivirus, but it can still be an extra layer of protection.

I have been doing some research on UFW and it seems that as a firewall for a desktop environment its more than enough.
As an antivirus i have seen that we have ClamAV, although it isnt a standard antivirus, but rather a scanner.
Should i also have live protection?

I know that everything depends a lot on whether files are shared with Windows OS, but i still like to secure what i can.

If you "should" have "live protection", it would have been included in the default install of Ubuntu.

It's okay that you have a lot to un-learn about Windows security, and to newly learn about how Linux security is different. It's good that you are asking the questions. Kudos.
All that you need to know about Linux security has been written many times before. Consider reading one of those primers. There are sticky posts in the Security category here. There is an Ubuntu Security Podcast. Dive into either, and it will answer your questions more rapidly.

Forget about clamav and any other virus control unless you are running a mail-server; it is completely unnecessary.

Probably good enough security is a firewall and ad blocker(sorry ubuntu forum) and common sense. If worried about your info, don't be because the nasties go after the big guys and collect hundreds of thousands of data of people at once and have your data already. A couple of years ago used to read about wide open databases left on the open web for anyone to read. No hacking needed.

Another thing to consider:

Install the minimal installation option which only comes with basic apps for the system.

Then...only add what you really need from the official repositories.
