To close out this thread, here was my final epiphany: Since 24.04 was not compatible with all my profiles in firefox etc, I just reverted the install to 22.xx and moved the profile files over as required. Now when the time comes and I'm brave enough to upgrade to 24, everything will be in place. Thanks for all your education along the way, getting smarter.
