    Microsoft should "Recall" their "CoPilot"

The two things people don't want on their PC, Microsoft's Recall and CoPilot... and it's the two things that are going to become mandatory for Windows.

I truly think Microsoft has become the reigning world champion on how to boil a frog... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boilin...%20to%20death.

One freedom snipped away bit by bit, and then replace with the exact opposite, bit by bit.

Ignorance is no longer the enemy... not by itself. The lemming in the middle of the pack may not know the leader of the pack is running toward a cliff... however, once he becomes aware of the problem... how does he get out of the middle of the pack? This is a form of forced cooperation, where the person buying the computer (or OS) has no idea what they are actually getting themselves into!

Tim: "Hey Bob. Did you realize that your computer has an AI program on it, with direct connection to the internet? Did you also know that your computer also records everything you do in a giant file on your hard drive, wasting space and keeping tons of personal data?"

    Bob: "No, I didn't."

Tim: "You should probably get a new operating system, if you don't like what this one does in the background."

    Bob: "Well... I don't know... I can't play Destiny 2, so..."

    Tim: "So?"

Bob: "So, I'd rather have Microsoft spy on me, take my personal information, and run AI on my desktop than not be able to play Destiny 2."

Tim: "Don't you value your personal privacy?"

Bob: "Of course, but I still need compatibility with Microsoft Office and Games."

    Tim: "What's the cost?"

Bob: "Huh? What do you mean?"

Tim: "What does it cost to keep compatibility?"

Bob: "Oh, Windows came free with my new computer."

Tim: "That's not what I meant. What you are saying is that the cost of playing games and using Microsoft Office is your privacy."

They "can." But they are both turned on by default.

Microsoft knows that if people are given the option to use them, or not... They will choose "or not."
And they also know that most Windows users will not go through their progressively frustrating settings menu to turn them off. They will even go so far as to put the option in the most non-relevant area of the settings so most people give up looking for it.

So, the other day, one of my co-workers asked if she could change her default browser from Edge to Chrome. We all use Windows on our work computers BTW... So, I hopped onto her computer and went to Settings --> Apps --> Default Apps -- Microsoft Edge to find this...

This is designed this way for one purpose, and thats to confuse the average user. Not only confuse, but make the job of "switching the default" very tedious. Most people will say "Never mind, this is going to take too long, and I'm not sure what I am doing... Forget it."

I started dabbling with Ubuntu from the beginning and went full time at 10.04 but the wife has to use Win for work,I personally didn't find it all that difficult to remove both and it took less than 10 minutes.I get where you're coming from...these are features that SHOULD be something a user installs after the fact IF they want those features.

I have a Windows 11 computer at work. If the IT department doesn't remove it from the "update schedule," then it gets installed regardless.

This is a work PC and is owned by the company that I work for. It's an Enterprise version of Windows... so at least the IT department can choose what updates are installed, or not.

But remember Microsoft is "boiling frogs."

They will make "Recall" out to be the best thing your computer ever did, and sell it to everyone on the platform of nonsense like "Never lose files again!!!" Why wouldn't IT want that? It'd make their jobs a ton easier. No more going to the server to find the most recent backup. Just tell the person on the phone how to "recall" the file, and it's all good!

And there are an awful, awful lot of "frogs" out there, some even sitting in IT depts. Easy now, let's not turn up the heat too quickly, just nice and slow.

Come to think of it, MS should "Recall" Windows 11. Better still, *all* Windows.
Never underestimate the stupidity of the human race!

I'm just one of those people that will always do backups.Back in the day at the very least I'd copy all my important files to a floppy disk or later a CD.These days the backup utilities are so easy to use it just becomes habit do it on a regular basis.

I'll never be one of those people that will ever store anything outside of my own storage media.Every bit of info I have is within sight on my desk.
