If it's an external keyboard, does it have a make and model? How does it connect to the system? USB? Bluetooth? Little USB dongle of it's own?

How did you install Ubuntu without using a keyboard? Much of the installation process can be done using mouse clicks but at some point we have to enter a user name and password. Before that we select a language (US English default). Then a keyboard layout. I am referring to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

Did you install using the on screen keyboard and then not select a keyboard layout? Even the on screen keyboard would require the selection of a keyboard layout. Otherwise it default to US English.

i believe the info they are looking for, jarrdi02, is the info you will be given in the command terminal from the command: inxi -bz
when you type in that command, if you haven't already installed the inxi command it will tell you what to type , at least ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04 did for my laptop. you can then copy and paste to the forum. pretty sure it will maintain format.

going off of memory, if i got the command wrong i'm sure they will correct me.

but they need to know about your laptop, since your external keyboard works fine. oh, by the way, was the external keyboard connected and over riding the laptop keyboard when you installed whichever flavor linux your using? if it was ask these guys if there is a way to rediscover the keyboard. there's bound to be one. windows has the ability, and this is a better program then windows. if there is no way to rediscover the laptops keyboard (which i doubt), just reinstall the operating systems without the external keyboard connected.
