Upgrade led to EFI stub issue and black desktop

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 24.04.01 and now have two issues:

(1) upon startup at the American Megatrends screen, I see "EFI stub: WARNING: Failed to measure for event 1: Bx00000000000000b" (see attachment) - this is new, never saw it before. What is it?

and

(2) once the OS starts up, I arrive a black desktop which, however, still has the files I need (see screenshot). All the font & stuff has changed, but I can still access my material so my work is limping along.


Suggestions?

You have not said, but, dual booting Windows ? Where Windows breaks UEFI:

Nope, not dual booting (only Ubuntu OS on the machine)
