    Upgrades to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Suspended / Re-enabled

    Utkarsh Gupta of the Ubuntu Release team tells us a bug has been discovered in an apt algorithm that handles obsolete packages. As a result of this, upgrades to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (noble) have been suspended. We're told fixes are in the pipeline already, with upgrades to re-open soon.

    Update; path is re-enabled:

    Julian Andres Klode announces that the fix is in - we are advised of the cause and resolution. Remedial action for some users may be in order, and guidance to rectify is provided.

    With the revival of the Ubuntu India Loco, the UbuCon Asia 2024 ended in Jaipur, India with an awesome note on 2nd September. There were several talks and workshops.     Ubuntu Representation at EthAccra 2024

    Bright Adams gives us an event overview of the ethAccra event held from August 29-31, 2024. Along with some details and photographs, we're told of the Ubuntu representation that Bright gave. We're told it was a successful event, and that thanks to Tobe and Kristi it's a significant milestone for the Ubuntu community in Ghana, where Bright provides his recommendations for the future.

    A desktop touched by Midas: Oracular Oriole

    Aaron Prisk starts by examining Orioles in 'literature and mythology' and sees it as alike the "spirit of Ubuntu". We're told that the "bird that Midas touched" is attempted to be captured in the official wallpaper (pictures provided). Aaron then covers what the Ubuntu Design team considered and explored before reaching the "aureate mascot" for Ubuntu 24.10. Finally we're given pictures of the competition wallpaper winners we'll also find.

We're given some details on how the process is done (prior and current Summit), with a focus on considerations that led to what is the new Ubuntu Summit logo for 2024.     What is Ubuntu's Upcoming Security Center GUI Tool All About?

    Sourav Rudra talks briefly about security applications, before focusing in on a 'Security Center' developed by Canonical for Ubuntu. We're reminded it appeared first in the roadmap for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS back in 2023, but didn't make it before release. We're told of the four key areas the app tries to deal with: encryption, Ubuntu Pro settings, Network (including firewall), and apps. The app currently deals only with app permissions, and Sourav outlines his testing of it on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. A provided GIF image highlights intended usage, and we're told how we can try it if we're using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or the alpha of Ubuntu 24.10.

    Here's Everything New in GNOME 47

    Dave McKay tells us GNOME 47 is 'packed with improvements' and will be released on September 18, 2024. Dave briefly mentions GNOME's changes since GNOME 3's introduction, and that this is another incremental change, before talking about what he sees in the beta he tested. We're given some screenshots, and walked through various improvements (which include performance increases) with a final conclusion that it's a welcome update.

    Android TV Box gets unofficial Ubuntu 24.04 upgrade

    Stephen Pereyra writes about how Murray R. Van Luyn converted a "Android TV box into a full-fledged Linux system". We're told the technique is specific to certain given models, and requires soldering, and was cross-compiled on a Ubuntu 22.04 LTS x86-64 machine.     Ubuntu Security Podcast: Episode 236

    "The long awaited preview of snapd-based AppArmor file prompting is finally seeing the light of day, plus we cover the recent 24.04.1 LTS release and the podcast officially moves to a fortnightly cycle."

    Alex Murray of the Ubuntu Security team firstly walks us through some changes that have and will occur in the Ubuntu Security Podcast. A brief coverage of security updates, news including Ubuntu 24.04.1 - and that upgrades from 22.04 have been pulled, and a new snapd-based AppArmor security permission prompt are featured.
