Thumbs down Upgrade Failure/Ubuntu Failure - again

    Howdy Developers,
I am a "user" of Ubuntu. I am not a developer. I just upgraded to Ubuntu 24.04LTS. Not only did the icons not show up for some of my most used programs after the upgrade (they are still installed), but I cannot even get Thunderbird to work anymore. I am going to be removing the drive from the laptop I have been using for Ubuntu for a long time now so I don't loose the data as I migrate to a mini Windows PC. This is disgusting! This is also NOT the first time this has happened. I have been a user of Linux since the Late 1990's with the flavor of choice being Slackware at that time. This is me venting for the coming work I'm going to have to do to save my data. I am tired of the failures of developers to make a system that actually "works". I am tired of upgrading only to find I have to "reinstall" the whole system again just to get it working. This is a waste of time even venting about it. This thread probably will be deleted sometime in the future (probably later today), but I want you to know that I am not happy and cannot be made happy after all the time I've spent over the years trying to fix what I should never have to fix.
Thank you for reading this. I expect no replies. I don't want any replies. I just want you to know that I am done. This is the last time I upgrade Ubuntu. I'll keep it on a computer that never touches the internet and only use it for historical information and playing music. I picked up a computer that cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 really cheap ($5) and will be putting Ubuntu there, as the only Ubuntu installation in my house as a music player.

You seem to be under the INCORRECT assumption that this web site is the home of the Ubuntu developers. It is NOT and many if not most members are just volunteers who also use Ubuntu. The link below is the Contact site for Canonical.

No developers here. Over all the years I've been in these forums, I've seen only 3 people who actually claimed to work for Canonical. I haven't seen any in over year.

Canonical certainly makes mistakes. They do 10,000 things correct and great, but it is 10-20 things that drive us crazy with every release. I get it. Supporting every possible combination of every type of hardware in an OS and making an upgrade go well is impossible. Companies with billions in revenue fail at this too. Hopefully, you won't experience that.

You have flawed memories of that other OS and the upgrades for it. We all have flawed memories about things in the past. I have fond memories of using Chromebook hardware with Linux, but the more I remember about it, the less great that hardware was compared to alternatives. At the time - that is key - a Chromebook was the best way to get cheap laptops for running Linux. Can't run MS-Windows on those without terrible performance. Rose colored glasses. We all have them.

Linux will still be here when you decide you've had enough of those other OSes and come back. See you then! You'll be welcome again.
