    I have tested a shared encrypted external usb disk but only for 30 minutes.
    BitLocker for Windows and dislocker for Ubuntu.
    dislocker is in the universe repository.
    I hadn't known about dislocker until it was mentioned by 1fallen2 in post 25.
    I simply used an 8 letter password to lock and unlock - seemed OK in my very limited test.

    I would also encourage you to conduct your own research into shared OS encryption, there may be more robust alternatives.

    When using encryption, it is essential that you always have restorable backups of your personal data.
