Re: The Future of the Forum

Please note: the transition dates have been changed.

https://discourse.ubuntu.com/c/support-and-help/306 will be officially open for business on Monday 2 December. (See the notice at the top of every page for further details.)

For an introduction to the section, should you need it: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/welco...and-help/49951 Many thanks to ian-weisser and wildmanne39.

Some things are still being worked on or need the rough edges removed, but the basics are working well. See you there!

BACKUPS are unsexy — until you discover you should have done one yesterday.
Spare your nerves and do one before you upgrade or install.

Re: The Future of the Forum

I just posted a new thread 4 hours ago.
Then I noticed the message at the top about the change in dates of the discourse.

I find myself asking a very important question.
(well...at least to me it's very important)

If my so-called "issue" isn't resolved BEFORE the last date...
Will I be in trouble for "dual threading" if I start a thread on the discourse picking up where the ubuntuforums thread left off?

    And...

In that situation of picking up where left off, will a "recap from UF thread" section in the first post be helpful where the "recap" summarizes what all has been done/tried to either narrow things down or attempt to correct the "issue"?
(This is to help prevent repeating the same things that were done in the UF thread)

I can't speak for everyone, of course, but if you start a new thread on Discourse and link back to the one here, so that everyone can see what you've already done/tried, I think that should be fine.

I forget what non-mods can and can't see.
Well, I don't think I am a mod, but I can see checkbox.
Green checkbox with Solved by Norm24 in Post #17
However, I do not see Post #s

Post numbers are to the right of the scroll bar, in the form post number / total posts. As a check, you can click on that and the post will highlight.

Absolutely, I used Reddit too but the forum mods all have little man syndrome. I recently had a Windows query, I posted to several windows forums and on each occasion it broke a rule of some sort and they all got deleted despite the fact it was a straight forward question on how to do something in windows. How they get to call themselves a help forum I don't know.

I don't know whether you can see this, but visible to forum staff at least, under the quick reply message box, is a line that starts: "Members who have read this thread in the last 30 days: ". At the moment the count is 7. Apologies if you can't see it - I can't remember whether it's a moderation tool visible only to staff. If you can see it, over on the right is a clickable + box which will reveal which members have read the thread.
    Thanks.

That's a huge generalisation, and I disagree. While some do, many don't. The Ubuntu and Linux for Noobs forums, for example, are fine. They just lack the depth of experience as many contributors on this forum have. And the non-Ubuntu ones do have quite a lot of tiresome anti-snap and anti-Ubuntu clutter by a tiny but noisy minority.
