Please stay far away from Discourse. Traditional forums are far better and more user-friendly than that.
Ubuntu Discourse (or Ubuntu Community Discourse) is a capable format for the Ubuntu Forums -- although I would prefer to see a new instance specifically for the UF rather than a subsection that would be somewhat at odds with the goals of the current instance.
In fact, we used it temporarily when the UF was down for an extended period.

A thing discovered and kept to oneself must be discovered time and again by others. A thing discovered and shared with others need be discovered only the once.
This universe is crazy. I'm going back to my own.
I fully agreed with this quite reasonable and sensible point of view...
...until I discovered that the Fedora community seems to reconcile the various goals on a single platform.
That caused me to reconsider.
Their implementation of an instance with the three tribes of users, volunteers, and engineers working together made a compelling vision.
It looked, to me, like a better way. It's a vision of the way I have always wanted Ubuntu to be. The Fedora site is not perfect, but it's going in the right direction.
I suggest others poke around that site and see if you like that vision.
I completely agree that a separate UF instance is an excellent and safe Plan B. Wholehearted support.
And, since we do have an excellent and safe Plan B, perhaps we have the breathing space to try a more visionary Plan A.
We use the same on a Arch/Based system: https://discuss.cachyos.org/c/general/4
I like it.
If it is set up with all options it will take the user (New or Old) and train them to use use the format.

Of the 3 tribes, I think volunteers & engineers will easily adapt to Discourse wherever we end up. For the new user searching for us, I think the intimidation factor should be low enough that they feel welcome to ask even a beginner question. This would mean less of a mixed bag I think. The developers should have their space, and the UF type support seekers should have their space in an easy to find manner.
