Backstory is normal
Friday morning just beating about on the internet and I thought.. hey i haven't cleaned up my boot partition in a while.. (see where this is going yet?)
i wrote a script years ago when my boot part was so much smaller (its 1G now, different story)
it goes and looks at the list of installed kernels and does a apt purge on them until i have only 5 left..
so i run it .. whaaa.. i have 72 kernels.. this is going to take a minute.. my attention wanes and i discover a thing that has not historically been a big issue
the in the list of kernels -116- comes right after -11- but before -20- so shorter story.. i deleted my active kernel on my 22.04 ... solidly updated and reliable laptop
so black screen .. i get it.. so get an installation disc (actually a USB, because, surprisingly, the install ISO doesnt fit on a 4.7Gb DVD-R anymore)
booted
went to try ubuntu
pulled up a terminal
opened my LUKS partition (whole disc encryption)
mounted my LUKS part
mounted my boot part
--bind the dev dev/pts sys and proc
chroot over to my broken system
and heres where the wierd parts go.. i tried to reinstall the 5.15.0-116 and 117 (and tried 6.5.0-18 too) apt install hangs installing any of the kernels just stops after generating the initramfs
whole thing pauses and never completes ... so trying again says dpkg is hung
so i do dpkg --configure -a and that also hangs in the same place
i can manually run update-initramfs -k all -c and it completes fine
i can manually run update-grub and it works fine
i can successfully uninstall kernels all day and it clears the apt process but for some reason it just will not complete an install
booting my laptop now times out opening my hd's
it drops me to initramfs prompt
but i can cryptsetup open /dev/sda2 rootfs and it prompts for a password and lets me see the contents
if i exit busybox it prompts me for my LUKS password again.. which makes me kinda happy but then just goes again into blinking cursor and staring at me..
i tried reinstalling grub ...
i thought i would run the install disc and just -re-install- the OS but this morning the install disc doesnt even detect the existing 22.04 installation on the disc so.. back to fixing the kernel install
Edit:
found waiting an hour got dpkg to complete
Also 2 hours and i could complete apt install --reinstall Linux-generic
But still hangs at initramfs
anybody?
I feel like i am missing something, i am getting older and this happens.
i have an old Latitude E6520
i have a 1G boot part at /dev/sda1
i have a 480G LUKS part at /dev/sda2
i have been mounting them by UUID for a while in FSTAB
and for what its worth i am also encrypting the user directories too.., so pulling the data off to an external drive and recreating it might be a little wierd too.. never tried that before..
my last boot.log says
