Is nautilus the same as the default gnome file manager?

Because I have no thumbnails on a fresh Ubuntu 24 install.

Yes, nautilus is the package name of the gnome file manager.
    Did You try this?
After apply the fix you must empty (or just delete) the directory /home/$USER/.cache/thumbnails/fail
don't worry, it will be recreated empty immediately afterwards

What is "the fix"? Going on over a month with no icons and it's becoming a daily pain.

I've read that post several times, including before responding to this thread, and do not see any "fix" there.

Please help me understand what you think the fix is.

Have anyone tried just installing the libraries needed to handle that kind of images?
I installed libjpeg for example and it worked. Next, ffmpeg thumbnailer and it worked. And later I make sure that libpng is installed too.
So, after deleting ~/.cache and rebooting it started showing the thumbnails.

Doesn't help me. I don't have thumbnails for any files on my Ubuntu 24 installation.

I think you have to try what is mentioned under here:

I did follow those steps, including again just now.

The only thing they did was break my system even more: the system theme has changed to bright white and cannot be switched back to dark again in settings until the change is reverted.

I just do not understand how this most basic functionality (render a thumbnail for an image) is broken, without any log or obvious indication of what's wrong, and no one from Canonical appears to give a crap.

    Hello,

as far as I know ubuntu devs do not appear very often here. You could mention your issue under launchpad. If you have the same issue with ubuntu desktop icons you could add yourself as affected here:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...g/+bug/2064849

even if noble is a stable release, the point release which is expected during August, I hope that it will short out many bugs. Unfortunately, I do not have any other ideas on how to fix this issue.

Just a remark: it wouldn't be a bad idea that updating the thread with your efforts and what it happened. Even if it wasn't successful it would have been helpful to know the result.

Also: are you getting the same thing under vb for example? Do you have any other account at the same computer that is affected? Are you sure that the fresh installation went fine? There are cases that the installation doesn't go well due to hardware issues. The things I mention might not be part of your case, yet since image thumbnails are not an issue any more under Files (formerly named as nautilus) this might be a reason for the bug you are facing.

    Regards!
