login suddenly not working from vnc

I can connect and i see the login and can enter the password but enter and arrow keys do nothing. I think the login screen used to be different and it changed.
also if i press an arrow key and then the password field it opens the on screen keyboard for one reason. how do i log in to my device? ssh works btw.

What are you doing on the remote system that needs the full desktop session? There may be a sleeker solution to what you want to achieve

i will not be using the vm for everyday use from the gui i just want to change some settings easily when i want. usually they work fine idk why this vm glitched like this. i am using ssh to remotely compile and run software on this vm.
