    23.04 -> 23.10 release upgrade fails on network-manager

    do-release-upgrade -d fails to complete citing "Setting up network-manager Error no such connection profile"
    Code:
    Errors were encountered while processing:

    Could not install the upgrades
    The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A
    recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).
    dpkg -a --configure shows network-manager configure script exits with an error:

    I do have a related customization that might be important in this: because of a PS2 on my network, we cannot run IPv6. I found just now network weirdness that cleared up instantly when I re-inserted the IPv6 blocks in /etc/sysctl.conf

    Is it possible editing /etc/sysctl.conf breaks the network-manager configuration script?

    Re: 23.04 -> 23.10 release upgrade fails on network-manager

    It "might"(?)

    I have to admit. That is not something that we usually test during the DEV Cycle testing. I don't know that it has come up.

    My suggests would be to submit it as a bug to launchpad on package 'update-manager-core'.

    Expected Behavior: That the do-release-upgrade is successful, but your error occurred, and why it didn't.

    During dpkg network-manager --configure, because of edits to /etc/sysctl.conf

    That way, they can address it, and correct it. It should allow for user modified configurations to either stay or have the choice to keep, modify, or install the new version, with a compare option that returns to that...

    Re: 23.04 -> 23.10 release upgrade fails on network-manager

    I ran into the same problem and although my system still functioned after reboot with ethernet network, apt continued to fail on this package when trying to install network-manager.

    I could purge network-manager to restore apt capability, but to work around this issue I had to move the network connection causing the problem which perhaps /etc/netplan migration was having problems with?
    Code:
    sudo mv /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/NetworkManager-USRP ~/NetworkManager-USRP.bak

    I had same problem.
    I just pluged an ethernet network cable in my PC, and network-manager installed fine.

    Happy to report this fix worked for me. I removed NetworkManager-USRP and then ran dpkg -a --configure and everything seems fine. the USRP file did contain a line setting ipv6 to 'auto' whereas my sysctl.conf expressly disables IPv6 on all interfaces.

    Same issue.
    The following packages have been kept back:
    gir1.2-nm-1.0 libnm0 libnm0:i386 network-manager
    network-manager-config-connectivity-ubuntu

    Workaround for me is, reinstall those packages.

    Re: 23.04 -> 23.10 release upgrade fails on network-manager

    Back in November '23, I too, upgraded from 23.04 to 23.10 and noticed failure messages pertaining to network-manager.

    The day of the upgrade I tried using apt to manually update the dependencies with no luck, and largely forgot about the issue until several weeks later when I tried using Ubuntu's built-in screen recorder. I could take screen snapshots, but the screen recorder would bomb and close after 1 second and create a 0 byte .webm file in the Videos/Screencasts/ folder. Error messages again pointed to network-manager. That led me to this message thread here.

    @binnychan's steps didn't work for me:
    ~# apt-get dist-upgrade
    ~# apt-get install --reinstall gir1.2-nm-1.0
    ~# apt-get dist-upgrade

    Nor did @jl2533's:

    ~# sudo mv /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/NetworkManager-USRP ~/NetworkManager-USRP.bak

    I read @clhdlh's comment and had to think what she/he meant by:

    I had same problem.
    I just pluged an ethernet network cable in my PC, and network-manager installed fine.

    And then it hit me ... I use a LAN cable for everyday access, and my WiFi is turned off.
    While staying connected via my LAN cable, I re-enabled WiFi and then tried @binnychan's three commands again.

    All three commands processed without error, and I am again now able to take screen recordings.

    ~# apt-get dist-upgrade
    ~# apt-get install --reinstall gir1.2-nm-1.0
    ~# apt-get dist-upgrade

    So I wonder if upgrading from 23.04 to 23.10 causes failure with network-manager if WiFi is turned off during the upgrade process?

    Re: 23.04 -> 23.10 release upgrade fails on network-manager

    I'm thinking that that may be true "if" there were other things that were configured 'previously' that might cause problems during the release upgrade...

    If WiFi was never used previously and configured, then there would be nothing there to cause any problems with that, and there would be no need to have it enabled during that process. Right? That is my thoughts on that.

    I am not sure why this is a problem for some people, and not for others. What I do know, that with Linux, it is not locked to a narrow range of "this will only run on 'this' hardware" (Like Windows 11 or MAC OSX). Linux is meant to be more open. But that does open up a lot of possibilities to try to cover, where there are a myriad of combinations, and combinations of combinations to try to be prepared for.
