    23.04 Microstutter/dropping frames when playing games or watching videos

    Originally I found this issue with Mesa version 23.0, so i tried to update to latest Mesa 23.1.7, the issue is still present.
    I also tried other distros, I didn't have the same issue on Nobara linux, which was also using Mesa 23.1.7.

    Code:
    sudo inxi -G
    Graphics:
      Device-1: Intel Iris Plus Graphics G1 driver: i915 v: kernel
      Device-2: NVIDIA GP108M [GeForce MX330] driver: nvidia v: 525.125.06
      Device-3: Acer Integrated Camera type: USB driver: uvcvideo
      Display: server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.7 with: Xwayland v: 22.1.8 driver: X:
        loaded: modesetting,nvidia unloaded: fbdev,nouveau,vesa dri: iris gpu: i915
        resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
      API: OpenGL v: 4.6 Mesa 23.1.7 - kisak-mesa PPA renderer: Mesa Intel UHD
        Graphics (ICL GT1)
    I'm not using the Nvidia GPU for now.
    I'm on Xorg session.

    How to fix it?

    Re: 23.04 Microstutter/dropping frames when playing games or watching videos

    Try adding "intel_iommu=igfx_off" as a kernel boot parameter...

    RE: https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/v4.1...arameters.html
    Code:
                    igfx_off [Default Off]
                            By default, gfx is mapped as normal device. If a gfx
                            device has a dedicated DMAR unit, the DMAR unit is
                            bypassed by not enabling DMAR with this option. In
                            this case, gfx device will use physical address for
                            DMA.

    Sorry for late reply, it was midnight for me.
    after adding the kernel parameter, I'm still getting the same result.
    Code:
    sudo cat /proc/cmdline
    BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-6.2.0-33-generic root=UUID=715da26d-40fd-4060-a55f-5f8383447334 ro quiet splash intel_iommu=igfx_off

    Re: 23.04 Microstutter/dropping frames when playing games or watching videos

    Which Model/Gen Intel CPU?

    Is it one of these?:
    * Broadwell
    * Skylake
    * Broxton
    * Apollo Lake
    * Kaby Lake
    * Coffee Lake
    * Whiskey Lake
    * Cannon Lake
    * Ice Lake

    If so, then do this:
    Code:
    apt list  intel-media-va-driver*
    If it says any is installed, then do this
    Code:
    sudo apt install vainfo
    vainfo

    +1 Nice
    @ benasd On mine to improve my intel graphics I made a .conf in /etc/X11/xorconf.d
    Contents include:
    Code:
    Section "Device"
            Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
            Driver      "intel"
            Option "DRI" "0" # DRI3 is now default
            #Option      "AccelMethod"  "sna" # default
            Option      "AccelMethod"  "uxa" # fallback
    EndSection
    Please note I played with both (Option"AccelMethod" "sna") that did not do what I wanted so this is what I settled on.
    Also this had a nice result in Grub:
    Code:
    i915.enable_dc=0 i915.enable_fbc=0
    Good luck But first Please continue with MAFoElffen suggestions before mine.

    You forgot this one:
    Code:
    apt list  intel-media-va-driver*
    It will show us a little more ie:
    Code:
    Listing... Done
    intel-media-va-driver-non-free/mantic 23.2.3+ds1-1 amd64
    intel-media-va-driver-non-free/mantic 23.2.3+ds1-1 i386
    intel-media-va-driver/mantic,now 23.2.3+dfsg1-1 amd64 [installed,automatic]
    intel-media-va-driver/mantic 23.2.3+dfsg1-1 i386

    Re: 23.04 Microstutter/dropping frames when playing games or watching videos

    I added it to xorg.conf.d and also added the kernel parameter.
    It actually made it much worse, now I just get get crazy stuttering and screen tearing and only getting roughly 40 fps.

    well you was instructed to wait first.
    and those weren't meant to be added all at once.
    Please undo what you have done, if you need help with that let us know.
    But Please wait for MAFoElffen to view your findings.
