"The following packages have been kept back"

This situation has been occurring lately whenever you run "apt upgrade" and each time I run this command the number of packages that are kept back is growing. Today I did an experiment of running the graphical update after the cli commands to see if it improved the situation. The update froze for many minutes, I had to restart the computer and after restarting the ext4 ubuntu partition was corrupted, as a result I had to use live gparted to delete the ext4 and grub partitions. I did not reinstall xubuntu as I am really unhappy with this new behavior when updating the system, so I opted to install Debian gnome which ran alright. I have more computers with xubuntu and if this situation continues or aggravates I will continue to switch to Debian. Please Ubuntu developers do not spend your time inventing new unnecessary things that may end up badly.

I'm just going to bite my tongue here, and hard.
First I'm sympathetic for the failed update.
Second The held packages are phased updates
When it's your turn they will just come in with the regular update/upgrades.
Third You do realize that we all staff included are all volunteers here right??? (None are apart of Canonical)
    Food for the future maybe.

It's still a work in progress. Thanks ian-weisser, that accounts for more than you think.

Re: "The following packages have been kept back"

I had already investigated this situation before and even posted a Thread, so I knew the packages that are held back are phased updates, that's why I just leave them and wait for a future update, This current thread relates two situations - the packages held back tend to increase along the time, and second I reported a problem that should never occurred, the graphical update froze and forced me to restart the computer with the subsequent partition corruption.

The purpose of not arguing ("bite my tongue") is not to avoid criticism.
It's simply being nice, patient, and listening.

Useful discussion about a reported bug should take place on the bug report, Please link to the bug report.
(Some folks "report" their problems here, that does not count. We are not the bug tracker.)

Generating interest, like subscribers or heat, in a reported bug is a great reason to discuss here.
Spreading news about a bug, and perhaps workarounds, is a great reason to discuss here.
Complaining about a bug here doesn't accomplish much. The developers will never see it.

Unfortunately, as I'm sure you already know, diagnosing and fixing one-time, non-reproducible freezes that leave no clues or logs is extraordinarily difficult.
You are welcome to join the legion of volunteer testers who search out and report bugs before each release of Ubuntu.
We need more skilled folks like you!

Re: "The following packages have been kept back"

Hi guys, I am relatively new to Ubuntu. I have used Linux Mint for several years and decided to try Ubuntu. As far as the package installs I saw that for years in other Linux distros. They make the new variant and sometimes there are several packages that work together so they hold until all have been revised. Than BOOM like yesterday all went through and none are waiting.
