Mouse keeps losing text selection

Keeps happening in Ubuntu 20.04

whenever I select text, the mouse keeps losing the selection. This does not happen when I use the touchpad. Apparently, there are quite a few people with this issue, but I couldn't find any solution for it.
The mouse itself works fine.

What does double click followed by third click at the first work of the text block do for you?

Then - with start block still highlighted hold down shift key - move mouse down to where text ends in the target block of text .

Is the entire block now highlighted?

As stated in the issue description, the symptoms are the same as in this old closed unsolved post:

When doing click and drag, the mouse behaves as if the button was randomly released.

This behaviour prevents any click and drag operation like selecting text or resizing a window.

From the older post:
