Thank you again for the excellent tutorial. I get it now. Interestingly, just now when I attempted an apt-get update I received the message:

The following packages have been kept back:
    grub-efi-amd64-bin grub-efi-amd64-signed shim-signed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded.

Now, I know there is a way to reverse them being kept back. I believe I've done it before. Should I ignore under the assumption that perhaps these could have contributed to my former errors? Is there a way to simply remove them and their associated parts so I don't get this warning anymore - I mean, the machine is running smoothly now seems I should just get rid of them, no?

Do not tinker with the guts of your packaging system for the sake of that innocuous message.

It is completely harmless and is just an "alert" for upcoming upgrades. It is not worded very well and has caused numerous misconceptions like the one you just asked.

Best to completely ignore the message and pretend like you never received it. When they judge the time to be right, the devs will actually release those updates at which point the message will no doubt change and you will be informed of other packages being "kept back".
