It means that no packages are broken.

Maybe a faulty upgrade to gnome-remote-desktop is the problem. Can you reinstall the removed packages? Some of the higher-level ones may pull in the lower-level ones, so you don't have to do all of them manually. It may be necessary to remove gnome-remote-desktop, if that's the cause of your trouble. You can then reinstall it later.

Don't do anything about the grub packages now. They aren't broken. There's an update to grub on the way, but it still in phased updates, so it may take some days before you get it.

Thanks Deadflowr. Just so I understand, does this mean that my gnome-desktop isn't working because the update for gnome-remote-desktop isn't working? If that's true, it's really too bed that the two are connected. I've never used remote desktop, but I absolutely rely on my basic desktop!! Any way to just get that back? I've tried & it just won't download or install. Any ideas on that?
    Thanks again!

Thanks Impavidus! It's good to know that no packages are broken. But it doesn't explain why Synaptic tells me there are broken packages.
Can I remove gnome-remote-desktop through Ubuntu Software? I don't think I've ever used it, so won't miss it. If that allows me to reinstall gnome-desktop, I'll be happy!
And yes, I have been able to reinstall other packages that were removed by the update. I'm not sure, but it appears they are now snap packages instead of applications. That confuses me, as a basic but committed Ubuntu user!

4 packages can be upgraded. Run 'apt list --upgradable' to see them.

And: :~$ sudo apt --fix-broken install
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree... Done

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 4 not upgraded.

The 4 not upgraded are grub 2 packages, which I see are problematic for everyone. But this is looking better. I still can't reinstall gnome-desktop though:

    :~$ sudo apt install gnome-desktop

I do not see a gnome-desktop in synaptic.

I see gnome which says it is the gnome desktop as a meta-packed which then will install a variety of gnome related packages.

+1 it just installs a vanilla gnome-desktop and not gnome-shell. Thanks for that oldfred, great point.
    EDIT:
    Code:
    apt search gnome-remote
