Update: I created a new Standard user and switched. Nautilus was operating normally. The multiple dots were appearing and the mouse hover worked normally (the open window thumbnails appeared). However, it looked different cuz I'm using Dash to Dock and the new user isn't. I expected that, of course.

    So, how to fix?

Hmmm.. Creating a new user... Never done that before. Let me start google searching how and I'll report back.

Any security risks in creating a new user?

Is the list of packages from your main user or the new test user? I'm asking because it indicates to the fact that you don't have Dash to Dock installed but you're saying you do. Did you install it from this page?

The list is from my main user account, not the new one.

Well, I think I have dash-to-dock installed. How can I tell? Here's a pic of my dock (taskbar?) https://imgur.com/8F3Mb7I.png (Right hand side.) Is this dash to dock? I have Gnome Tweaks installed.

I installed it back in August, so my memory is hazy. The page you link to looks vaguely familiar.

    Is this dash to dock?
    No, that's dash-to-panel.

Unfortunately, I don't use GNOME so I can't really tell what it is. On the GNOME Shell extensions website, there is a tab called Installed extensions. Depending on your web browser, you need a dedicated extension (i.e. browser add-on) to access it. Check whether you have it installed and also get the list of extensions if you can. There is also a separate app for extensions on your desktop named Extensions. Check there.

Thanks for recognizing that. Very helpful. Looks like no one here can resolve my issue :-[ so I'll try posting my q elsewhere. Perhaps on the Dash to Panel github site.

Perhaps you can provide a bit more details as requested? `dpkg -l` tells that Dash to Panel is also not installed.

I was going to suggest removing this extension from that website and install it from the official Ubuntu repositories but it's up to you.

I posted a pic of my taskbar ( https://imgur.com/8F3Mb7I.png ) and Dennis N said it was Dash to Panel. I think that's the only Gnome extension that integrates the taskbar with the system tray (what do they call the system tray in Gnome land?).
