What is a "Web shortcut"? If you want shotcuts on the desktop to open a browser to a specific website then Gnome will be a hurdle for you. If you use another desktop like XFCE or KDE then you can have desktop icons. Alternatively you can can make a folder with the shortcuts in. Just make a launcher to run (I'll assume Firefox web browser)
    Code:
    firefox https://www.facebook.com
    For example.

Thunar, the default File Manager on Xfce, supports this. If you drag the current url from url box in Firefox and drop it on a Thunar window, you get a dialog for creating a desktop configuration file (.desktop). I don't know about other File Managers.

Thanks all and am tempted by monkeybrain20122's suggestion but I will see how I go with Xubuntu. Will make this 'solved'
