    Re: Why updates

    Because

    1. They were updates to the kernel or ...

    2. They were improvements to the OS or ...

    3. They were security updates or ...

    4. Application developers made changes/fixes/updates or ...

    5. Etc

This is not Microsoft's world where changes are gathered up until they decide to release them. What would you call "SOOOOOOOO many"? 10? 50? 100?

What version are you using and is this a new installation?

    Re: Why updates

I had 44 upgraded packages on my 21.04 system in the past 7 days. There were 2 kernel upgrades, each involving 4 upgraded packages and some newly installed ones. It's uncommon to have 2 kernel upgrades within a week, but it happens. There was an upgrade to LibreOffice, which included 17 packages at the same time. LibreOffice is big and consists of several packages, which are usually upgraded together. Those are not related to the kernel upgrades; it's coincidence that they happened in the same week. Then an upgrade to vim (4 packages) and some random others.

So if you also had around 44 upgrades in the past week, that's more than average, but still a random fluctuation.

    Re: Why updates

If OP and other users would just accept Ubuntu's default updating system using Unattended Upgrades for security updates and Software Updater with default setting of weekly notifications for other updates, their problems with update interruptions be greatly reduced.

    Re: Why updates

It is a conspiracy! Well, that is my theory, anyway.

In different places groups of people conspire to change the code in software packages to force users to update. Some weeks they do not work very hard and to cover up they put out the message: "The software on this machine is up to date." Other weeks for some unknown reason they work day and night and put out mega bytes of updates. That's my theory.

We have also had a firmware update and an update to the Mesa libraries. All mega bytes of code. We have a method where the whole code of a package has to be replaced and not just the sections of code that need replacing.

I give you this under the heading: "Be careful what you wish for." Wait until you get to the section on OSTree. Read it and whisper softly the words, "snappy ubuntu core." There is the origin of Snap packaging and Canonical did not come up with the idea.

It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

    Re: Why updates

It's all LibreOffice updates to 7.2. Ubuntu is completely normal.
Don't start a conspiracy delirium, please (and either read the log or watch the update running).
