    Re: Dual Boot Kubuntu 21.04

This is the steps I was following https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/commen...o_run_kubuntu/. Howerver I can't even boot to the linux after the installation.
This is the result of running the command

I agree I don't need the 16GB of RAM but I was just following this https://userbase.kde.org/Kubuntu/Ins...ion#Disk_Setup which stated use at least half, and the system I am using has 32BG of ram. Also there is an ubuntu folder in the efi partition.

    Code:

Please see the boot-repair summary. Ubuntu Pastebin
    Any help would be appreciated.

It will take some times to solve this. I will let you know.

If you have 32 GB of RAM, then 4GB of swap is plenty.
If you do not manually create a swap partition, installer defaults to a swap file of 2GB for typical desktop install.

Have you installed Windows multiple times? You show 3 Windows UEFI boot entries using different GUID/partUUIDs for the ESP - efi system partition.
That would indicate you erased ESP several times.

Lets see details, use ppa version with your live installer (2nd option) or any working install, not Boot-Repair ISO:
Please copy & paste the pastebin link to the Boot-info summary report ( do not post report), do not run the auto fix till reviewed.
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair &
    https://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair/home/Home/

You can remove old or duplicate UEFI boot entries with efibootmgr. See
    man efibootmgr

    # from liveDVD or flash booted in UEFI mode and use efibootmgr, Boot-Repair report will show current ESP's partUUID. Then others can be deleted.
    sudo efibootmgr -v
The "-v" option displays all the entries so you can confirm you're deleting the right one, and then you use the combination of "-b ####" (to specify the entry) and "-B" (to delete it). Examples #5 is delete:, with Ubuntu you need sudo, others must be at root. some need all 4 hex chars, others only need significant digits
    sudo efibootmgr -b XXXX -B

I've never installed Windows multiple times, but it could be a possibility since I wasn't the first person to use this device. However I ran the windows recovery flashdrive a couple times when I thought the issue was UEFI partition, which involved the steps included in the How to repair your MBR (Main Boot Record).

    Re: Dual Boot Kubuntu 21.04

You have a BIOS boot loader for Windows in nvme0n1. Just never try to boot in BIOS mode & that will not be used.
    You only want UEFI boot.

You show two ESP which is ok.
One on nvme0n1 on p1 partition (starts with 793..), which has both Windows & Ubuntu folders & boot files.
And other on sda1 (PartUUID starts with 052..) which shows an Ubuntu boot folder.

I often have installs on second drive like sda1, but default install always wants to install grub2 UEFI boot files to nvme drive. I have to do a work around if I do not want an install on sda to use sda's ESP.

You have two UEFI boot entries for Ubuntu.
The one labels ub1 looks like the correct entry as it uses ESP on nvme drive.
The default boot entry ubuntu is on sda's ESP and does not show details in report.

Are you booting Ubuntu entry or ub1 entry from UEFI boot menu.
If you are letting it just use default it is using sda's ESP which may not be correct.

It also looks like only the 0006 Windows boot entry has correct partUUID.
You can test the entries but I expect in UEFI boot menu, they will all have same description.
After confirming they do not work, delete 0005 & 0008 Windows entry.
I might also delete ubuntu entry and if you can boot with ub1, from inside Ubuntu just run this to get new ubuntu entry.
    sudo grub-install /dev/nvme0n1
Or use Boot-Repair's advanced mode, choose install & choose nvme drive. Also check install latest kernel to get other updates.

    Re: Dual Boot Kubuntu 21.04

The ub1 entry was added manually using the bios options.

I just ran the boot-repair using the live-usb method the summary is as follows https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/73xgGVtdFW/.

But no change it still sticks on loading initial ramdisk, when I boot using the recovery mode, because the normal mode just shows a blank screen

    Re: Dual Boot Kubuntu 21.04

It never wrote a new ubuntu boot entry, saying locked ESP.
Some computers (somehow) have a way to lock or prevent edit of ESP. Do you have setting in UEFI that locks ESP. You probably have to review manual for your system.

Or it may just be Windows fast start up is on. That locks NTFS partitions with a hibernation flag and may lock the ESP?
Make sure Windows fast start up is off. It gets turned back on with updates, so even if you turned it off before you may need to redo it.
Fast Start up off (always on hibernation), note that Windows turns this back on with updates, SHIFT + Shut down button

    Did you update UEFI firmware.
And NVMe drives often need firmware update also.
You will need correct nvidia driver and may have to install by booting in recovery mode and using terminal.
If any nVidia driver installed, you have to totally purge before installing a new driver.

Are you booting with something in USB ports? Beside mouse & keyboard?
It seems to be having a lot of issue with some USB device.

The devices in the usb ports are the Live-usb and my Logitech wireless dongle which is needed because when I boot in the Live-usb the trackpad clicks doesn't work.

I followed the links you sent wrt disabling hibernate and fast startup(fast startup was already disabled). I would look to see if there is a settings in UEFI to prevent editing of the ESP. I know there are alot of issues/complaint pertaining to the nVidia drivers for this device but I didn't select the option to install 3rd drivers during the installation and the system has never once booted in the the linux after installation.

The latest UEFI firmware is installed.

    Re: Dual Boot Kubuntu 21.04

Firstly I would like to thank @oldfred and everyone else that tried to help me solve this issue. However I really couldn't get it to work even with multiple fresh installs. However just to confirm some issues that this laptops has, the usb issue that you mention I was able to confirm via windows device manager that there is a usb device that shows up as Device Descriptor Request Fail and it continuously caused Device Manager to refresh over and over.

After my final attempt to install Kubuntu, I tried to install Arch Linux and during the process it kept saying
    Code:
Usb1-9 port: unable to enumerate USB device
throughout the terminal. However if I ignore the messages and type the commands to install the Arch after about 5 hours of navigating the terminal I got Arch to install using the KDE desktop environment.

The message above kept appearing throughout the entire process even after clearing the screen, while typing commands and while using nano editor.

I think I would continue using Ubuntu on my main work desktop in a VM and use this setup with my laptop. Maybe once I have more time as well as more knowledge about Linux I can comeback and try the Kubuntu install

Please let me know if I can just close this thread.
