Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS Icons disappear from desktop display

Since installing Ubuntu 20.04 i am unable to create icons or files that will display on the desktop. The files are present in the desktop folder shown in my file system. They do not show up on the display.
Furthermore, it seems to be impossible to copy a file from the folder to the desktop.

Check that the gnome-shell extension "Desktop Icons" is turned ON.
Search for and open 'Extensions' application where this can be done.

The Desktop Icons extension has always been turned on since I have been having the icon problem. It is as if the desktop display has been given a property that prohibits creation or display of icons or files.

Also check the settings for 'Desktop Icons' - use the gear symbol next to the switch. There are options there to display home folder icon and trash icon. Do those display?

But, besides that, any file placed in your Desktop Folder should automatically show on the Desktop when the extension is ON. That's how it works for me. At the moment, nothing comes to mind as to why they would not.

Re: Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS Icons disappear from desktop display

I switched to the unity desktop and all of my icons have reappeared on my desktop. I have the ability to create folders on the desktop and to move files from one desktop folder to another.
Why would unity work and gnome not work?
