    Any idea why "wine" wants to remove so many packages?

    I'm a bit puzzled by this

    Does anyone have any idea why installing "wine" would want to remove so many other packages??

    I imagine this must be some kind of bug?? I don't remember "wine" doing this before ...

    Have you done a release upgrgade recently often after a
    Code:
    $ do-release-upgrade
    a lot of old packages are left over due to changes in the release.
    Have you routinely used apt autoremove to remove unnecessary packages? These may be left over unremoved packages.
    What happens if you;
    Code:
    $ sudo apt autoremove --simulate
    ?

    No, I'm still on Ubuntu Budgie 20.04. I never do in-place upgrades, they just never work for me.

    Code:
    > cat /etc/lsb-release

    DISTRIB_RELEASE=20.04
    DISTRIB_CODENAME=focal

    Does only wine do that or do other packages list so much to remove when trying to install them?

    Yes. Only wine.

    Someone on "Reddit" mentioned installing "aptitude" and trying a
    Code:
    sudo aptitude install wine64
    ... as that would generate more useful error messages.

    Looks to me like "wine" is unhappy with the version of libc6 that is installed on my system.

    ...
    Code:
    The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

         Remove the following packages:
    1)     libc-dev-bin [2.31-0ubuntu9.3 (now)]

         Install the following packages:
    2)     libc-dev-bin:i386 [2.31-0ubuntu9.2 (focal-updates)]

         Downgrade the following packages:
    3)     libc6 [2.31-0ubuntu9.3 (now) -> 2.31-0ubuntu9.2 (focal-updates)]
    4)     libc6-dbg [2.31-0ubuntu9.3 (now) -> 2.31-0ubuntu9.2 (focal-updates)]
    5)     libc6-dev [2.31-0ubuntu9.3 (now) -> 2.31-0ubuntu9.2 (focal-updates)]

    Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?]
    Looks to me like "wine" wants "libc6" to be in version 2.31-0ubuntu9.2 ... but I have 2.31-0ubuntu9.3

    What do you guys get when you try to install "wine"? And what version of "libc6" is on your system?

    Voilà :

    Code:

    Re: Any idea why "wine" wants to remove so many packages?

    So I changed my main repositories from the Swiss mirrors (ch.archive.ubuntu.com) to the German mirrors (de.archive.ubuntu.com) because those are often more reliable.

    The result is that now I get shown a newer "wine" version:

    Code:
    > apt --simulate install wine

    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
    requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
    distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
    or been moved out of Incoming.
    The following information may help to resolve the situation:

    The following packages have unmet dependencies:
     wine : Depends: wine64 (>= 5.0-3ubuntu1) but it is not going to be installed or
                     wine32 (>= 5.0-3ubuntu1)
            Depends: wine64 (< 5.0-3ubuntu1.1~) but it is not going to be installed or
                     wine32 (< 5.0-3ubuntu1.1~)
    There was no "wine" version 5.0-3ubuntu1.1 before, only 5.0-3ubuntu1

    So when I try to install that it complains about broken dependencies and suggests other packages that need to be installed. In the interest of keeping this post short I will jump to the end, the last command I ended up with trying:

    Code:
    > apt --simulate install wine64 libwine wine32 libfaudio0 libvkd3d1 libc6:i386 libwine:i386

    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
    requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
    distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
    or been moved out of Incoming.
    The following information may help to resolve the situation:

    The following packages have unmet dependencies:
     libc6 : Breaks: libc6:i386 (!= 2.31-0ubuntu9.3) but 2.31-0ubuntu9.2 is to be installed
     libc6:i386 : Breaks: libc6 (!= 2.31-0ubuntu9.2) but 2.31-0ubuntu9.3 is to be installed
    E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
    I have no "held" packages:

    Code:
    apt-mark showhold
    ... prints nothing.

    So this really comes down to "libc6" and "libc6:i386" disagreeing with "wine" about which version needs to be installed.

    Code:
     libc6 : Breaks: libc6:i386 (!= 2.31-0ubuntu9.3) but 2.31-0ubuntu9.2 is to be installed
     libc6:i386 : Breaks: libc6 (!= 2.31-0ubuntu9.2) but 2.31-0ubuntu9.3 is to be installed
    One package wants to be in version 2.31-0ubuntu9.3... the other wants to be 2.31-0ubuntu9.2. And they mutually break each other??

    Re: Any idea why "wine" wants to remove so many packages?

    I found the reason. There's indeed a bug with libc6 and a faulty patch that has been revoked.

    Bug report:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...c/+bug/1926918

    Solution:
    Downgrade libc6 back down to version 2.31-0ubuntu9.2 ... it will also remove these packages:

    Code:
    build-essential will be removed
    g++ will be removed
    g++-9 will be removed
    libc6-dbg will be removed
    libc6-dev will be removed
    libexpat1-dev will be removed
    libpython3-dev will be removed
    libpython3.8-dev will be removed
    libstdc++-9-dev will be removed
    python3-dev will be removed
    python3.8-dev will be removed
    zlib1g-dev will be removed
    ... but those are easy to reinstall afterwards.

    After this "wine" will install without complaining and deleting half the system!

    Code:
    > apt --simulate install wine

    ... output cut ...
    The following additional packages will be installed:
    ... output cut ...

    0 upgraded, 264 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
    Yay!! No more removing totally unrelated packages!
