Set MATE as default desktop environment

    Hi,

I have installed MATE on 20.04.2 LTS but I can't make it my default DE.
Any time I log in, I have to change the DE to MATE which is quite annoying.
I have tried a lot of things found on the net but none helped.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you!

Re: Set MATE as default desktop environment

If you have installed the Mate DE as a second desktop environment It can't be set as default , but you can choose to login to it for daily use. You would be better off backing up and installing U-Mate from the ISO. Having more than one desktop makes for a bloated system and can become problematic especially if you intend to upgrade the system. The upgrade will be applied to the primary/originally installed DE.

    Hi,

I have tried to answer politely to your reply but I couldn't so pls be informed that I have read your comment but I can't do anything with that. It's a beautiful example of writing a lot and telling nothing.

    Have a nice day.

Actually, the response is concise and directly to the point.

Post what you have done and tried that you found on the net.
Otherwise people might/will keep posting solutions you have already tried that failed.

Funny I installed Mate on one of my computers and it took over the machine. I've since deleted most of it and am happily back to mostly gnome but still get the mate login and splash screens.
