    New IPv4 address when roaming

    Using arpwatch on my Debian router at home.
    Since I upgraded my laptop to 21.04 I am getting multiple emails a day saying that my laptop MAC has a new IP.
    On investigation it looks like this is happening when my laptop roams between APs.
    It doesn't affect IPv6 [which is a relief because I am pretty sure my SSH sessions would be dropping if my IP address is changing].

    From this I can see that the client is sending two DHCPDISCOVERs 3s apart, maybe that explains why it gets a different v4 IP?
    Also, the second one doesn't include a hostname. Don't know if that is significant

    If your router supports DHCP reservations, use those for the MAC in the laptop. Make the reserved IP outside the normal DHCP address range.

    You can also tell the laptop wifi not to change APs automatically and there is a wifi NIC option to control how quickly it will change APs, if you want to screw around with that. I think it has to be added to the module loading line in /etc/modprobe.d/ . The exact option will be NIC and driver specific.

    Because I don't know how to secure IPv6, I have it disabled on all my systems and my router blocked all attempts to tunnel IPv6 through IPv4 - thanks Microsoft.

    If your wireless is roaming to another AP, then I would expect a different IPv4 address. The behavior is entirely correct.

    What I would not expect is that a computer that needs to be always available by SSH would be allowed to roam. Frankly, I also wonder why a DHCP address would be allowed. D stands for dynamic; i.e. changing.
