    16.04 esm

Does anyone knows when Canonical will make available the Tokens for ESM? It's still only for 14.04.

    Thanks you!

Scroll down to the end of this web page

    https://ubuntu.com/security/esm#how-long

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Extended Security Maintenance should already be available from April 2021.

Thank you! So the only thing is to wait from here. Since i just can't update my system because the high demand from the pandemic, i'll just stick with 16.04 maybe until next year for the next LTS release.

    Re: 16.04 esm

According to prior notices Ubuntu 16.04 ESM started on April 30, 2021

    https://fridge.ubuntu.com/2021/03/13...april-30-2021/

However I've not posted a later notice than that, as the 16.04 Xenial archive was still open last I heard, as the Ubuntu Release team wanted to

"get a final round of grub+shim updates into the main archive"
The packages were (last I heard)

"held up by the autopkgtest infrastructure on arm64 being backlogged"
Note: I'm quoting Steve Langasek of the Ubuntu Release Team.

Rather than close the archive on time, re-open for the package(s), the closing of the standard support of Xenial (16.04) has been delayed.

It was hoped for this to have occurred already, but the time-line I was given also allowed for it to take a number of hours more.

(this is the current knowledge I have as a member of the Ubuntu News team)

    Re: 16.04 esm

    Once again, thank very much!

By the way: I was successfull in activating ESM in Ubuntu 16.04 for free of charge as the portal instructed. Even inside the Ubuntu Advantage is written "14.04 only", the token works perfectly with 16.04!
I just did sudo ua attach <my token> and i received this:

sudo ua attach TOKEN[sudo] senha para pinho:
    Enabling default service esm-infra
    Updating package lists
    UA Infra: ESM enabled
    Enabling default service livepatch
    Installing canonical-livepatch snap
    Canonical livepatch enabled.
This machine is now attached to 'xxxxxxxx.com'

    SERVICE ENTITLED STATUS DESCRIPTION
esm-infra yes enabled UA Infra: Extended Security Maintenance (ESM)
fips yes disabled NIST-certified FIPS modules
fips-updates yes disabled Uncertified security updates to FIPS modules
livepatch yes disabled Canonical Livepatch service

    NOTICES
    Operation in progress: ua attach

Enable services with: ua enable <service>

So, it's done! Now i have some more time to upgrade my system smoothly with no rush. I think i'll wait for the next LTS release 22.04.

I've done the same for my 16.04... used 14.04 token and gotten similar to "Blue". My read shows 'live patch' as enabled with other three the same as "Blue".

I'm wondering if I'm supposed to enable the two 'disabled' pieces I have.

Also wondering if I'm supposed to disable 'livepatch'.

To say, I followed this to set up ESM on my 16.04: https://ubuntu.com/blog/ubuntu-16-04...aintenance-esm (See mid page)

I got my free (personal subscription) token here: https://ubuntu.com/advantage

And I guess I should ask (the second link does say "for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS only"), am I going to wish I hadn't done this?

    Mike

Edit: In the quote, the process shows 'livepatch' enabled, but the "Blue" shows 'livepatch' disabled.

My belief is No (you won't regret it).

Because of issues covered in my prior post on this thread, and with britney a number of 16.04 notices expected May 30, have been delayed (and have yet to go out, or have gone out instead with vague dates)

    But that's just my opinion....

(someone who is still waiting to post on the official end of standard support for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS)
