Can I just put the disk/usb in, and run an upgrade?

UbuntuDDE is an independent distro BASED on Ubuntu. It is not an official flavor of Ubuntu. You can't "cross-grade". You would have to install Ubuntu fresh, but you'd also likely have to do some good backups of important data.
Moved to Ubuntu/Debian BASED.
